My friends, I could use your help.
I've quite a number of seedlings under evaluation, and describing their colors accurately seems to elude me.
Being a guy with only a very basic understanding of tint, tone, hue, and shade is probably a good excuse too.
A RHS color chart is expensive and difficult to obtain. I prefer to NAME the hue, color, tint, etc., rather than "RHS 121b" for example. I can't use a interior decorator's color swatch with their ridiculous, fanciful hue descriptions. I just need a way to accurately describe color in a way that doesn't just say, --- violet, orange, pink, rose, blue.
Any suggestions, resources?
Thanks for your time

Do you mean a synonym for violet and others? Google's a big help. I just found mauve, periwinkle and amethyst for violet.

Couldn't agree more with avoiding decorators' fanciful names !!

.... i did look up ,"violet" and found those descriptions, but they seemed to be distinct permutations of the color violet.
I guess what im looking for is a way to accurately nail down a color description that everyone can picture.
Lets take the color orange, for example. When is "orange" just "orange", what are the colors, "persimmon", valencia", "cantaloupe"
orange?
Pink is confusing to me as well.
What color is "rose", "porcelain", "venetian", "geranium", "baby ribbon"? Keith Keppel labels one of his pink selfs "safrano pink"
Just what the Jimmie Jack heck is "safrano pink"?
Yeah, im way confused!!!

Timothy ~ I just looked up Safrano Pink up on Google, and it is named after an antique rose of the same name.

Thanks Evelyn
That gives me the impression of the origin of the name, but not the color description, beyond a basic pink tone, after looking up the picture of the rose itself.
For the few intros that I have to my name, I enlisted the help of a local iris club member (hence the RHS description) and a artist lady friend that helped out with the actual color names. Smiling

Timothy ~ If I were a professional hybridizer, I would invest in the RHS Colour Chart from their website. It would be a wise investment. Get the latest edition, as it has names along with the numbers.

I know the feeling on ridiculously descriptive colour descriptions. You do not need 100 words to describe one colour!

I wish ya luck on finding some not over the top iris colour descriptions! Hilarious!

Keppel has some artist color chart, therefore some of his crazy names. I would make it as simple as possible. Try paint chips? giving the brand.

I would imagine, that if you checked on Amazon, you could get a reprint copy of Ridgeway's Color Standards. The colors aren't "totally accurate", as it would be a photo copy of a pretty old book (which probably has "changed hues" over the years), but the descriptive names of the colors are quite interesting. Shrug!

Arlyn ~ With this book, "Color Standards and Color Nomenclature: With Fifty-Three Colored Plates and Elev:Full Color Photographic Edition by Robert Ridgway, I also found Werner's Nomenclature of Colours: Adapted to Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Anatomy and the Arts by Patrick Syme (for only $14.95) Smiling

I sent for the Ridgeway's several years ago....from Amazon....when it was first "re offered" (an "original" copy is WAY too pricey Blinking ), but, when I received it...it was all in "black and white" Confused ! I contacted Amazon, and they said that I wasn't the first to complain (apparently there was one "batch" that *somebody* screwed up on( hard to believe that ANYONE would make a black and white copy of a book of color samples D'Oh! ), and sent me a replacement copy....in COLOR Thumbs up . I've found it quite handy when trying to ID historic iris....it was , apparently, one of the standards used by many of the early hybridizers, when "describing" the colors of their intros (in the days before color photography was a common thing). The "names" of some of the colors are very descriptive , ...you might say "colorful" Sticking tongue out
