Apologies if this has already been discussed and settled *Blush* but is it possible the database photos and information for Arctotis stoechadifolia should be under A. venusta instead?

I ran into these two pages on the South Africa National Biodiversity Institute when I was looking up how to germinate A. venusta:

http://pza.sanbi.org/arctotis-...
http://pza.sanbi.org/arctotis-...

The first page is for A. venusta and mentions "[it] has been cultivated in botanical gardens in Europe for about a hundred years. Due to some confusion by botanists, the species was at first incorrectly named A. grandis and A. stoechadifolia, a very different species." The photos on the page show white flowers with blue centers surrounded by a yellow ring.

The second page is for A. stoechadifolia, and the photos show yellow flowers.

This paper discusses the mix-up: https://www.researchgate.net/p...

Here's an excerpt:

"During a 1939–40 study of Arctotis specimens, Norlindh (1964) found that in the last revision of Arctotidinae, Lewin (1922) had misinterpreted A. stoechadifolia P.J. Bergius, a prostrate, mat-forming perennial occurring in open sandy, seasonally wet areas and stabilized dunes in the southwestern Cape. Lewin applied this name to an erect, tap-rooted annual occurring in a wider range of habitats and with a broader distribution in inland southern Africa (Norlindh 1964). The native ranges of the two entities do not overlap. Although Norlindh (1965) subsequently described and named the annual species A. venusta Norl., Lewin's interpretation has been adopted widely. Arctotis venusta is a popular horticultural plant and is often grown under the name A. stoechadifolia,A. stoechadifolia var. grandis (Thunb.) Less. or A. grandis Thunb. Sometimes the names A. stoechadifolia and A. venusta are treated as synonyms (Brickell and Zuk 1996)." (PDF) Notes on two southern African Arctotis species (Arctotideae: Asteraceae) growing in California. Available from: https://www.researchgate.net/p... [accessed Dec 08 2018].

The paper describes A. stoechadifolia as having white or pale yellow ray florets and black discs.

Thank you!

Has anyone had an opportunity to think on this? Is there something I can do to help with additional research? Thank you!

Hi Michelle,

I can only speak for myself and not the other plant admins, but unfortunately I haven't had the time to look at this yet. It's a busy time of the year for most of us, so I'm afraid it likely won't get looked at until after Christmas. Please "bump" the thread again if nobody's looked it by New Year, though.

Hi Michelle,

I have had a chance to look at this issue and I agree that all the photos were in the wrong place. I have updated the two plant entries and moved the photos.

Thanks very much for all your work! I deleted my events from Arctotis stoechadifolia and added them to A. venusta.
