I comment on the photo composition. I am going out on a limb because I achieved the same effect when taking a photo of a lily when using a flash. The light reflected back from the flower, but the light that didn't hit a surface never reflected back to the camera leaving the background black. I think something such as this happened here, resulting in a superb photo.
