I had just posted this on the veg forum but think it might be interesting here also.
"Has anyone ever heard of a Strawberry Onion? I hadn't. Apparently they are a Savanna Sweet that is planted around the edges of the strawberry fields in Florida to repel insects and other pests. To return the favor Smiling the strawberry plants seem to give off something in the soil that increases the sugar content of the onions. They are supposed to be significantly sweeter the Vidalias or Savannahs not planted by strawberry fields. The bulb on this one is about 5" across."
I was speaking with the farmer and learned they were able to use far fewer pesticides, if any at all, when the onions are planted with the strawberries.
