Do not let the soil get bone dry but expect some or all foliage to drop in the winter. My potted plants will do either but as soon as my average date of last frost is nearby, I move them outside. They then leaf out. While leafless, I try to make sure there is some soil moisture so I do not water at normal spring watering levels but rather at a "reduced" amount until I see the plants break dormancy.
