They like good drainage. They like a cool dry rest period in winter. But mine seems pretty happy with minimal care too, as above say. In Maryland it stays outside in hot humid shade until cool weather, then bring in to keep from freezing.
Since the problem was winter, I wonder if yoursd got too much moisture then. At that season it is trying to rest , so moisture would encourage problems.
Plant it and they will come.
