Fred's Red is a nice looking red that is excellent if you are 75% done with your bloom season by the end of July. It's a brighter, clearer, and larger red than older late reds like Autumn Red, at least to my eye.

It's not overly fancy, but it is a late that does some bud building when conditions are right. I phrase it that way because it was really dry early this season, and I only got 3.5 weeks out of it this year. This year, it started blooming Aug 4 for me and has bloomed into September three of the last five years for me, which is pretty good for around here.

I've been working on hybridizing later blooming daylilies, and Fred's Red has been a good parent. Small sample size, but it seems to pass along the "late" gene best when it's a pollen parent, for me.

Some Fred's Red seedlings I've come up with;

+19-30 9-29-04 VT (Olallie Unreg Sdlg) x Fred's Red - As late in starting as After Awhile Crocodile. This photo is from Sept 20 a couple years back. You can see the October Sky asters blooming in the backgroud.
