Appears to be a pome, so I'd look at Rosaceae and specifically Crataegus... lots of 'em in Tennessee.
According to USDA Plants, there are:
C. arborea, austromontana, calpodendron, crus-galli, disperma, engelmannii, flabellata, flava, harbisonii, helvina, inanis, intricata, iracunda, macrosperma, margarettiae, marshallii, mollis, monogyna, nitida, penita, phaenopyrum, pinetorum, pruinosa, punctata, ravida, rhodella, ringens, sargentii, schuettei, spathulata, succulenta, tinctoria, triflora, vailiae, viridis, vulsa.

Chances are most can be discounted pretty quickly.
