This is an old rose bush. It's been in my garden about 23 years It's been cut back a lot because it likes to grow! All of a sudden this year a giant, somewhat ugly branch, shot out of the middle. It's a large specimen, but I don't remember the name and I can't find a tag on it.

Here is a picture of a blossom from this season to help identitify the plant.

Does it repeat its flowering? If so, perhaps Kathleen or Lyda Rose? If not, perhaps Newport Fairy or Apple Blossom from Burbank? There are a number of possibilities. That shoot doesn't appear unhealthy so I wouldn't consider Rose Rosette Disease, at least not just from that one photo. Was this past spring particularly wet or has the plant been recently provided a good helping of fertilizer? Do you remember the origin of the plant? I guess it could be possible it's a root stock sucker, however it doesn't resemble what I would have thought that might have been.

The wild shoot does appear to be a different rose. Is it coming right out of the ground or can you see a point of attachment to the old plant.

Porkpal.
That's a good point. I'll hunt under the plan to see if it is going into the base plant or into the ground. If it's going into an old plant...problem solved, I cut it.

Roseseek.
It isn't a repeat of anything. It's an anomaly. It could be a rootstock sucker, but it has been in the ground in my garden at least 23 years, and this is the first time I've seen such an ugly sprout.

Porkpal and Roseek. Thanks for. your comments.

I am not sure from the pictures, but it looks as though the original rose has leaves in five leaflets and the intruders are in seven leaflets. Look for that too.

Yes, you can see the culprit. It's at about 7:30 o'clock. It is out of the ring of stems.
But, as I see. now, so is the one at 5 o'clock. Further investigations is needed. :-)
