Seedfork's blog: Just weed spraying

Posted on Feb 5, 2016 9:28 PM

Well, with all the rain and the beautiful warm weather the weeds are popping up by the thousands it seems, in the lawn. The garden beds are virtually weed free still because of all the mulch.
Last year I tried to get ahead of the weeds in the lawn. I sprayed too early I think and it had no effect whatsoever on them. So I spent the rest of the year pulling and spraying trying to get them under control. By the end of the year I thought I had done a pretty good job of eradicating them. Well in a few spots there is a very noticeable reduction in weeds this year. However, in a couple of large areas the weeds are so abundant it makes we wonder if I actually pulled weeds last year or sowed seeds.
Well, yesterday I sprayed one section and today I sprayed the second section and also I sprayed the fence line almost all the way. I read the instructions and it said the temp should be at least 45 deg. F, and for the past few days (without rain) it has been way past that.
Now it seems next week should be the coldest weather we will have had all year, so I hope the spray takes effect before the cold gets here.
Also, yesterday I cleared out all the old dead growth from last year out of one bed, and today I cleared another bed, so there is now practically nothing left to clear, just a few scattered purple coneflower stalks.
I set my seed tray with the new tomato and zinnia seedling out in the sun for a short period today, hope to continue to do that till the cold weather returns. By late march I hope to be able to set the seedlings out and have them be already acclimated.
I did manage to give away all my remaining Iris plants I dug out, saved a few for myself and got them planted. I also had some other bulbs (Daffodils I think) left and I managed to get those planted. I am hoping they will actually bloom this year. I Don't have any hope the Iris will bloom this year.
I checked the newly planted roses and they seem to be doing fine, I think that three inch rain we had settled them in perfectly. Now I have to decide on a fertilizer and spray program for them. I am the worlds worst at keeping up with those type of things.
