LysmachiaMoon's blog: Heart health update

Well, it was good news bad news at the cardiologist. The good news: My fluttery heartbeat is ventricular tachycardia and is caused by a sort of short-circuit in one of the nerve centers in the heart. It's annoying but not life threatening; the doctor prescribed a miniscule dose of beta-blocker and told me to stop drinking caffeine. So that was pretty reassuring. (I've also realized that a lot of this has to do with state of mind. I can stop the flutter if I just tell it to go away.... I attribute this weirdness to my mother...a crazy woman if there ever was one. Apparently I have inherited the "nervous nellie" gene....)

The not so good news was that my cholesterol (LDL) level is through the roof. I expected this because my family is cursed with the genetic defect that keeps our livers from producing the enzyme needed to break down LDL. The cardiologist wants to start me on a statin and see if that helps. She knows it's not my diet or lifestyle because my HDL and triglyceride levels are actually excellent. Because of this high LDL level, she also wants me to do a stress test to see if any of my arteries are blocked. I think this is a reasonable next step; better to find out that way than a heart attack...but I am surely not looking forward to yet another test. I have that depressing feeling that I've climbed onto a conveyor belt called "US Healthcare" and can't get off.

So...the genes will get you in the end. Crazy gene from mom and LDL gene from dad. *sigh*

We had an absolutely beautiful day yesterday while I was busy with doctors (naturally), so got nothing done outside. Today is cold and overcast. I am going to try to finish up some edging and then I really have GOT to turn my attention to the veg. I'd like to get my peas and onions in this weekend. The whole veg needs a really thorough cleanup too. It was the last to reappear from under the winter snow and what a mess ...I thought I'd finished cleaning up the asparagus bed but no....and I still need to trench that bed and get it ready for new asparagus plants.

Crocus are slightly past peak and daffs are just starting to open! HUGE V's of canada geese went over yesterday. I estimated roughly 200-300 birds that I saw.
