Sharon's blog: Ethan's sunflower

Posted on Jul 27, 2012 7:43 PM

I haven't planted sunflower seeds in years but when I knew my grandson would spend his spring break with me, I decided to grab some seed packets at the local dollar store. He loves to plant and I thought he might like to watch sunflowers grow and bloom.

It worked out just as I planned, he planted a pot full of seeds and included a solar light in the pot. That was in April and the plants grew but before they could bloom the drought hit hard.

Only one sunflower survived and it has the most glorious bloom; it looks right into my glass doors and bobs its head as I work on the computer. I think it's making up for all the other plants that gave up when the drought and heat left their footprints all over us.

The sunflower stalk is about 7 feet tall; I'm guessing, but it's in a pot that is 2 tall steps down from my deck and if I'm standing on the deck, it's just a little above my face. It has more buds, so it will last a while longer.

A little bit of sunshine left for me by my golden boy - at a time when I really need it.

Little boys are like that.
