MaryE's blog: 2021 #19 Dog got skunked

Posted on Mar 11, 2021 10:37 PM

Thankfully it wasn't my dog. Our daughter in law gave her a bath with a skunk remedy she found on the AKC site. It's hydrogen peroxide, Dawn dish soap and baking soda. It worked. And then the next night one of their cats got into it. Maybe not sprayed but he is stinky. Will the cat get a bath? Our son says he helped with the dog (a German shepherd) but his wife can take care of the cat. I suggested that he take pictures.

Yesterday I cut off hundreds?? of those lilac sprouts that come up from the roots around one of our old lilacs. So many that they filled a wheelbarrow! Most of them were about 2 ft high and just larger in diameter than a pencil. It's a hands and knees job and Peaches was very happy to help. And then she hogged one of my sun warmed kneeling pads and just supervised my work. From past experience I knew she was likely to do that so I took 3 outside with me. I kneel on one and have the next one ready as I make progress. It sure makes the job easier when I don't have to get up and I keep my knees from getting poked by the stubby cut off stems and warmer at the same time. The ground is still very cold, not frozen but cold. Some tulips and squill are just showing green under that bush so it was a priority to get the sprouts cut off before too many of the bulbs broke ground. This plant has been trimmed to resemble a cluster of trunks like a small grove of trees. I like the crooked trunks. The rail fence is just behind it with horizontal rails. My horse prunes branches that he can reach. He does that to the wild roses too, often watching me out of one eye when I am working at the kitchen sink, more or less saying "feed me, I'm so near starving that I have to resort to eating stickery rose bushes."

A friend sent me lettuce seeds of several new-to-me varieties, so I have started those in the greenhouse. I think we will be eating a LOT of salads! These should be ready for selective snipping just about the time my older ones are tired. An aloe has just started to bloom. I've never had one do that. I'll take more pictures. So far the buds lowest on the stalk have opened and the top ones have not. They might still be developing.

Today I checked the garlic rows for green sprouts. None yet. I think it will be a couple more weeks but I just had to look. The snow is all melted in the garden, and we only have a few piles beside the driveway and drifts by the fence you saw in those pictures about 10 days ago. They are shrinking more every day. The pasture is looking quite green, not exactly like spring but not the yellow like it did last fall either. We've had several days in the 50's and below freezing every night. The county road even has some dust!
