Last pump

Disconnected the main waterfalls pump. Brought it in along with the skimmer basket and filter.

It is going to be a long time until spring.
Sunday, November 29, 2015

Heaters

Dave strung up 3 heaters for the pond and got them all plugged in for the winter.
Friday, November 27, 2015

Starting shut down

Tried to get algae out of pond and vacuumed.

Brought in all 3 pressure filters and uv lights.

Moved 1 lily tub over and put bubbler on top of it. Positioned bubbler so it is no more than 18" to 2 ft down.

Added 9 - 4# boxes of salt
Added remainder of microbelift/fall winter.

Air temps 61 degrees. A gorgeous day.

coffee by the pond

It's rather warm out. Warm enough for coffee. Right now adding water to the pond. Cut back the bog plants and water lilies last month. There are still a lot of leaves on the trees. We will need to vacuum and salt -probably some time this month.
Thursday, September 24, 2015

Ammonia

Ammonia measured 0.

Water temps 69 degrees
Air temps 71 degrees.
Wednesday, September 23, 2015

Ammonia

Checked ammonia and levels were at 0.25. Added ammonia remover
Tuesday, September 22, 2015

Parameters

Fish are on the bottom of the pond - took measurements.

Air Temperature 71 degrees

Ammonia - 0 -?
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 0

Judy's fish

Found the fish that Judy brought so many months ago. We both thought the bullfrogs had gotten him.
Saturday, August 8, 2015

3 fish

Bought 3 more fish from BDK
Saturday, August 1, 2015

Parameters

Parameters are all at 0. Everything perfect.
Tuesday, May 19, 2015

Judy

Judy told us to keep the bubbler on to help heal the fin of the gin rin asagi. I learned that oxygen will help with the healing.

Judy also told us that we need to put the bubbler about 18" below the surface of the pond and keep the bubbler running all winter.

Gin rin Kohaku and Yellow Bela fish

Got them from City Zoo.

Added. They are hiding too.
Wednesday, April 15, 2015

Vacuumed and Fertilized Waterlilies

Platinum still hiding in the WL tubs. The others are hiding behind the pumps.
Thursday, April 2, 2015

Flush pressure filters before hooking up.

this will eliminate some of the crud that flows into the pond at start up.
Thursday, April 2, 2015

Platinum

Bought a platinum today. I think she is 6".
Wednesday, April 1, 2015

Start up

Started up all pumps, uv's and pressure filters today. It seems strange to see the pond with no fish.

I put in microbelift and

50 scoops of Pondzyme.
Wednesday, March 25, 2015

Bubbler

Started the bubbler this morning so the pond does not freeze. I need to get a couple of pumps going today. I may put the heaters back in too. It seems we are still too cold especially at night.
Tuesday, March 24, 2015

Emptied Pond

Emptied the entire pond. Got the remaining leaves out with a squeegie that Dave bought. That worked well - especially the part with the sponge - to get the leaves off the sides of the pond.

I still think there were too many leaves in the pond and that contributed to the fish loss.

Took the remaining fish out of the pond. She was dead too. There were 2 large tadpoles that I could not get out. When we buy fish, it will have to be mentioned and perhaps we will need to look at buying some larger fish -8" or so?
Wednesday, March 18, 2015

Water temps

36 degrees.
Monday, March 16, 2015

Baby Asagi

pulled him out this morning. There are still more dead fish.

Took tests:

Ammonia 0
Nitrate 0
Nitrite 0
Ph 6.8 -7

Sunday, March 15, 2015

Daves Asagi

Pulled Dave's asagi out this morning.
Saturday, March 14, 2015

Bela

Pulled Bela out of the pond. I saw 5 more color spots under the ice. I am hoping some are still alive.
Friday, March 13, 2015

Fish Kill

Pulled out the kohaku, showa, shishui, asagi, orange fish with black?, Sanke/bekko. They are all dead.

New Deicer died

Replaced. Bought 2 - this time bought extended warranties as well.
Sunday, November 23, 2014

shut down

Air temps are warming up. Water temps at 34 degrees.

After this blast of cold, I am glad to get the pressure filters, uv lights and pump into the cellar and the deicers into the pond.

Warm up tomorrow and then cold again. If the water gets too warm, I can turn on the bubbler.
Wednesday, November 19, 2014

Freezing!

Freezing frigid weather! The pond is icing up and there is quite a bit of ice on the waterfalls.

We were going to shut down after getting back from Thanksgiving. Going to do it this weekend instead.
Tuesday, November 11, 2014

Vacuumed the pond

Added 10 - 4# boxes of salt.

Getting ready for shut down.
Thursday, October 23, 2014

water temps

Feeding fish

started feeding the fish today.
Monday, April 28, 2014

waterlilies

Pulled the tubs of waterlilies and put them on the other end of the pond. I thought the tubs worked so much better than those pots we had for so many years.

Everything fertilized before returning to pond.
Thursday, April 10, 2014

Quartz sleeves - uv

The quartz sleeves were a mess at start up. The white vinegar took the crud off the outside of the sleeves.

The pond seems to be clearing quickly. We probably should have cleaned the sleeves last year.
Sunday, April 6, 2014

Start up

started up the remainder of the pumps and added the uv lights and pressure filters. It went well.
Wednesday, April 2, 2014

Started up the main falls

Water temps were at 50 degrees. I started up the main falls and put in 1 dose of Microbelift.
Tuesday, April 1, 2014

Water temps

Fish are moving around. Water temp is 45 degrees @ 4:45 pm

Pond heater

Took out the garbage today and saw that 1 of the pond heaters had died. The other heater is fine - I will pick up another heater at Tractor Supply and replace the one that died.

Monday, November 25, 2013

shut down

Shut down after work today. Water temps are 30 degrees. Air temps are 30 degrees. The pond was covered with ice this morning when I left for work and when I returned from work as well.
Saturday, November 23, 2013

Added Salt today

This morning was cool - mid 30's, but sunny. I added 8 - 4# boxes of salt today. I will check the salinity over the next couple of days. It seems to be getting colder sooner this year than normal. I am hoping to shut down while I am off for Thanksgiving vacation.

By the time it was late afternoon today, we had a layer of snow.

It is getting cold.

Water temps - 62

A gorgeous day today. The sun was out all day and it was a beautiful day. At 5:36 pm it is 64.2 degrees

Water temp today 62 degrees

The fish were voracious with their appetites.

Cloudiness - Brown algae

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

Cloudiness - Brown algae

Excessive rain will cause a brown algae to appear which will also create a brown tint. We have had rain almost every day. Called Tim and we need to allow the pond to cycle in order to clear water. Doing a water exchange as well.

Sunday, May 19, 2013

Baby Asagi

Seemed to have something wavy on her head - there also is a lump which could be koi pox. Not sure - if it is an illness or parasite the medikoi will take care of it. I know this fish had koi pox last year.
Thursday, April 25, 2013

Medikoi

Noticed the showa had a scrape on her head with green growing on it. Also, the bekko baby looked to have a bit of stress or was septic. There was a red mark on his fine. Bella seemed to have a fungus as well.

Feeding them medikoi until the food is gone.
Thursday, April 4, 2013

Started up today!

Started up the main falls, the Japanese falls and the bog pump. UV lights are in place. Put in first dose of Microbelift.

Yay!
Friday, March 29, 2013

Water temps

43 degrees today. Probably won't be starting pumps until we get back from Turning Stone next weekend.
Wednesday, March 13, 2013

Starting pump?

I had thought about starting up a pump or two while Dave has been in the hospital. I had even wondered if he had been here instead of the hospital if we would have started.

Temps are to go down again - perhaps it is a good thing that I didn't start anything up.

41 degrees. Fish definitely are moving around.

Fish Moving ?

Seems early for the fish to be moving around. Yesterday when I went out and looked at the pond, all the fish were over by the waterfalls, at the top and just under the ice.

Today, I did not see any fish near the surface, however, it was just snowing a bit ago.

I know it is early, but I really want to be able to sit outside by the pond.
