March 13 2016

A little cool, windy here in southern NH - 47. Yesterday I attended the New England Daylily Society monthly meeting at Tower Hill Botanical Garden in Boylston, MA. The speaker was Bill Waldrop of Kennesaw Mountain Daylily Gardens Entertaining, humorous and an overall great guy. It's obvious he loves daylilies. His 2016 introductions are phenomenal. During the afternoon auction, I won Kennesaw Crossfire and Lydia's Regal Robe. On my wish list: http://www.daylilytrader.com/k... and

Winter's Grip just won't let go
Posted on Mar 2, 2016 8:42 PM

brrrr it's mighty cold outside tonight here in southern NH. We had temps in low 50's on Monday; today woke up to rain and temps in high 30's. By afternoon, the skies cleared, the winds picked up bringing biting, cold air. As I write, we're at 24 degrees and dropping. We're expected to have a low of 17 by 7am tomorrow Thursday March 3rd. Have I mentioned I hate winter? One of these days I'm going to get the gumption to move south. In the meantime, I'll just dream of warmer days.

With hubby's help, we have the garden plan layout complete. He's in charge of the drip irrigation, so have to insure we have all the rows planned out before laying the irrigation.

I went out to the greenhouse today to count supplies (pots, potting soil...etc) and noticed my rose I potted up last Fall is looking amazing. This was a plant I started with the layering method: I took a branch from the mother plant laid it on the ground and covered with soil Two years later, it had rooted enough I could cut free from the mother plant. I potted it up, put in the greenhouse and wow. This lil girl is going in the garden this spring. It's from own root rose Paul's Himalayan Musk - rambler. It's only once blooming, but what a show it puts on.... now that I think of it, why is it some people frown on once blooming roses? We have once blooming Peonies, Once blooming Delphiniums, Once blooming Iris.... etc
Things that make me go 'hmmmm'.

Starting another year February 2016
Posted on Feb 26, 2016 10:51 AM

My first post - wow. Smiling It's Friday, February 26th. Here in NH we actually can see bareground. In 2015, we were buried in snow. This year, not so much.

As I write, I'm listening to the Farmer to Farmer podcast with host Chris Blanchard. Today's episode features Chris interviewing Jane Hawley Stevens of Four Elements Herbals, certified organic medicinal herbs, located in North Freedom WI (Baraboo Bluffs). My son lives in Madison, our next visit, I may just look up Jane. I'd love to help with 'garbling some herbs' and just 'hang out with the crew'. Now, that's my idea of a perfect vacation.

I revel in getting my hands in the soil. Here in NH, I go through garden withdrawals during the winter months. Sad Seed catalogs usually show up just in time to quell my winter blues. I've placed my seed orders and perennial orders with Bluestone Perennials, High Country and Heirloom Roses. In the next few weeks, we'll be starting up the greenhouse. I bought some Mexican Midget tomato seeds (Seed Savers Exchange). Dave has talked about this particular variety so much that I just had to try growing this year. We'll also start Amish Paste, Anna's Russian, Russian 117, Wisconsin 55 - our favorite sandwich tomato, honey bunch of grapes and for peppers we'll have Giant Marconi, Carmen King of the North... can't recall the rest of the names and of course flowers. Cosmos, Zinnias, Marigolds, Verbena, Allysum, Nastursiums and sunflowers.

March 13th, we 'turn the clocks ahead 1 hour' for Eastern Daylight Savings. Finally, daylight will be longer (more time to play outside). Pinch me; spring is just around the corner.
