antsinmypants's Plant List: OP

A note from antsinmypants
Feel free to ask about anything in my list you may be interested in. I'm always looking to trade. Just because something isn't in my want list doesn't necessarily mean I don't want it & just because something I have isn't marked for trade doesn't mean it isn't available for trade. I stay busy so don't always get around to updating.

Fast n Furious Swap - WF - 2023

Tomatoes Galore Swap 2024 - dave - Victory Seed Company, packed for 2024.

Valerian is easily grown in average garden soils in full to part sun. Its preference is full sun, with consistently moist conditions, and soil consisting of fertile loam but can adapt to less ideal circumstances. It can be grown in part shade, however, the stems may flop. The more shade, the more this condition will increase.

It is a non-native herb that has escaped cultivation and has spread primarily in the northern US as it prefers cooler weather and abundant rainfall. It spreads by rhizomes and seeds and can be weedy. It is listed as a noxious weed in Connecticut and Wisconsin.

It is grown medicinally for the sedative effects of the drug valerian that is obtained from the roots. Other uses are in foods, perfumes, and teas. An oil obtained from the leaves and root is used as a flavoring in ice cream, condiments, and baked goods.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: No serious insect or disease problems. Can become weedy and invasive. Its presence in the wild may displace native plants.

When used as a medicinal, prolonged use can lead to addiction. Adverse effects can include headaches, nausea, agitation, heart palpitations, and insomnia.

Garden valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a perennial non-native invasive plant of sunny wetlands and roadsides. Untreated, this plant can form dense infestations that replace native vegetation and harm wildlife habitat.

Valerian grows in a wide range of soils but prefers a moist, but well-drained loam. PLANT HEIGHT: 48-78". PLANT SPACING: 12-18". HARDINESS ZONES: Zones 3-9.

DND's All Seeds Swap #9 (2022) - Jlee160 - collected 2022

An easy-to-grow, big blooming, low-maintenance perennial for the low-water garden. Produces multiple flower spikes throughout Summer that reach nearly 5' tall with numerous, cheerful, 1", open-faced pink flowers that emerge in succession to prolong the show. Don't be afraid to deadhead! This isn't a one-spike-wonder and cutting the flowers for floral arrangements or removing spent blooms will encourage MORE flower spikes and prolong its season. Can be short-lived, but reseeds reliably for the future generation. Good drainage is preferred.

EARLY SPRING SEED EXTRAVAGANZA #1 - 2024 - Ladyreneer - Organic for 2024, medicinal

Native American tribes used root tea to alleviate fevers and headaches.

Edible Uses: The flowers, with the main stem removed, are a welcome addition to a tossed green salad. They are also delicious cooked vegetables when used similarly to broccoli. Medicinal Uses: A tea made from the root is febrifuge. The root is also believed to be vulnerary and hypnotic.

These seeds need a winter or cold period to germinate -a minimum of 60 days below 40°F in moist soil (or sand or vermiculite).

Typically the plant does not bloom in its first season from seed but will begin to flower in its second season.

Zones 3-8.
