Thornless Blackberry (Rubus 'Chester') |
Have Plant MIg OP Collected or purchased 2023 Perennials Fruits & Vegetables Full Sun Plants Successfully Growing |
MIG - 2023 - 1 Plant A great all-around thornless blackberry. The Chester blackberry can grow anywhere from the Northern to Southern states. This variety can tolerate hot and dry weather and is known to be winter hardy. Their large firm but not tart berries ripen in July-August and are perfect for fresh eating, preserves, and baking. First-year or juvenile canes of erect and semi-erect varieties may be trailing. Let them grow, and they will produce fruit the next year. After the fruit is harvested, prune the canes back to the ground to make room for strong, erect, new canes. Zones 5-9. |

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum '1884 Purple') |
Have **** Plant OP Collected or purchased 2023 Tender Perennials Fruits & Vegetables Tomatoes Full Sun Plants Successfully Growing |
Chicagoland annual plant swap - Ellen The 1884 Purple tomato variety is similar in many ways to the very popular heirloom tomato "1884": The same huge flavor, the same size and shape, and similar plant characteristics but the fruit has a reddish-purple color with dusky shoulders. Spontaneous mutation from 1884, darker and better than the original, according to Tatiana Kouchnareva who cultivated and observed it in 2006. She named it so to highlight its purple color and its difference from the original. Fruit 200 to 600 grams, beefsteak type, round, swollen, and ribbed at the upper pole. Deep and narrow depression at the peduncular attachment. Crimson epidermis verging on brown with green shoulders. Juicy and creamy flesh with a sweet flavor rich in aroma, exceptional. Black to purple 10-24 oz. Beefsteak Indeterminate Mid-Season ~80 days. |

Have * Plant OP Collected or purchased 2023 Tender Perennials Fruits & Vegetables Tomatoes Full Sun Plants Successfully Growing |
2023 Chicagoland annual plant swap The taste test winner many years in a row, Carbon is one of the most successful beefsteak-size tomatoes we've grown, uncovered, out in the field yet. We easily harvested a couple of hundred pounds of fruit from about 50-row feet of plants. Flattened 12-16 oz fruits have brownish shoulders and deep dark red flesh. The flavor is a revelation, deep, rich, complex. The best description I can give is immediate silence and then eyes, half-closed and rolling back in bliss, at a happy autumn tomato-tasting. Content nods and "yep, that one" announced a near-unanimous winner. It has a bit of heirloom tomato funk, concentric cracking, and blossom end "cat-facing" (though much better than most), but if your bottom line is flavor, this is the one. Indeterminate. 85 days. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Don's Double Delight') |
Prev Plant Collected or purchased 2023 Tender Perennials Fruits & Vegetables Tomatoes Full Sun Plants Successfully Growing |
2023 Chicagoland Annual Plant Swap - Ellen The potato leaf vines of 'Don's Double Delight' grow to over six feet in height and produce large, eight to sixteen ounce, irregular oblate-shaped fruit that are red in color with golden orange streaks. Its pale red flesh delivers a delicious flavor similar to that of a classic red tomato flavor, but slightly sweeter. We observed a lot of scarring and splitting during our unusually harsh 2021 growing season, but productivity and flavor did not seem to be affected. For best eating quality, 'Don's Double Delight' tends to ripen quickly and it is best harvested before it reaches its full mature color. Sent to us in early 2021 by Craig LeHoullier. Craig obtained 'Don's Double Delight' a tomato friend of his from Raleigh, North Carolina (co-conceiver and leader of the ten Tomatopalooza tomato tasting events), Lee Newman. Lee helped Craig with his various 'Lucky Cross' / 'Little Lucky' family selections. Lee discovered and worked to stabilize this wonderful variety, which he named in honor of his father, Don, and shared with Craig in 2011. Indeterminate 85 days |
