Deer Resistant Seed Mix, Floswers From Dollar Seed company. In includes annuals and perennials: Contains at least 17 wildflowers, annuals and also some perennials, that deer do not like. Will bloom in large bursts the first year, with the wildflower annuals first to flower, then subsequent years there will be color from perennials.

Note: The larger the area planted the better the results. Maybe get a bigger package in future years for this border area.
Approx. 500 Seeds/Pkg.

New in 2022

Received this plant from Joyce in June. Attractive leaves. It prefers to have water, especially when transplanting, but handled it well and did well in the heat in Michigan summer. Pretty flowers in September when not much else is blooming. So far does not seem aggressive.

Is toxic to humans if ingested, especially if cows ingest it and then humans drink the milk or eat the meat. (Story of Lincoln's mother.)
September 26, 2022: Bloomed (Lovely white blooms)
October 1, 2022: Transplanted (Received plant from a friend (Joyce). Transplanted and needed plenty of water to help it settle in. Once it was watered well, it handled the heat just fine. So far is growing well in the border. Does not seem aggressive. Attractive flowers when not much else is blooming.)

Will start to replace these plants with natives: There are significant downsides to hollyhocks: beside some disease issues, it is a biennial or a short-lived perennial. Most of all, Alcea rosea (Hollyhock) is listed in the Invasive Plant Atlas of the United States. According to the U.S Forest Service, Invasive species have contributed to the decline of 42% of U.S. endangered and threatened species, and for 18% of U.S. endangered or threatened species. Invasive species compete directly with native species. There are significant downsides to hollyhocks: beside some disease issues, it is a biennial or a short-lived perennial. April 28, 2020: Seeds germinated (First Winter Sowing of Hollyhocks)
May 7, 2021: Bloomed (First blooms, biennial, CSS coordinator garden, Ann Arbor, Michigan)
August 9, 2022: Bloomed (Second year of blooms, as a biennial, CSS coordinator garden, Ann Arbor, Michigan)

Seed obtained from Seed Swap. Central USA native. Lead plant is a small, branching, shrubby perennial. It is densely hairy and can become woody with age, but some winters it dies back to the ground. Size Height: to 3 feet. Photo and description: Missouri Dept of Conservation.

Flowers are tiny, massed in tight, elongated spikes; stamens with reddish filaments and yellow anthers protrude from lavender or purple flowers. The corolla is reduced to a single, top petal (the "sail"), lacking the other petals (the "wings" and "keel") common in pea-family flowers. Blooms May–August.

Leaves are alternate, feather-compound, to 4 inches long, with up to 5 rounded, short, gray-hairy leaflets each to about ¾ inch long and ½ inch wide.

(Pearly Everlasti - Pearly Everlasting) Anaphalis margaritacea
Pearly everlasting is under appreciated. It is a North American native and easy-care perennial with lance-shape gray-green foliage that forms an attractive mound from spring to fall.

In 2nd year growth in south back yard garden, full sun, light shade in morning.

Ordered seed in 2019 from Prairie Moon Nursery Winona, MN and Winter Sowed it 2020.

I grew it in full sun in my community garden plot. I have two sturdy plants to overwinter before I plant it in my perennial garden, and I'll see how it does with more space. I did already cut stems for drying, to go with my annual strawflowers.
November 17, 2023: Obtained plant (From group order, Geo Seeds, by Kirk. Note special cultivation hints for dried seed heads. NOT listed in the Speciality Cut Flowers book. It is also called western pearly everlasting or pearly everlasting, an Asian and North American species of flowering perennial plant in the family Asteraceae. So far, I don't see where the plant was growing when I planted it previously. Will try again for the perennial to thrive at Johnson PG in 2024.)
January 13, 2024: Seeds sown (Seeds winter sown in jug. Keep an eye out for this one this year, 2024. This was one of four winter sown jugs I did at the Seeds to Community Winter Sowing workshop in 2024.)

Obtained seed from Jan. 2022 seed swap. New to me in 2022.
Goatsbeard plants like part shade, moisture and need shelter from the hot afternoon sun. In the northern range of their hardiness, they can take full sun; however, they will require consistently moist soil and will likely burn during any sort of drought.

Spent flower stalks can be left on the plants through the winter for visual interest, but should be cut back before new foliage emerges.
February 1, 2022: Seeds sown (Winter sown. Needs light to germinate. Protect from afternoon sun. )
May 28, 2022: Plant Ended (Removed, Died, Discarded, etc) (Did not germinate. Will try again using Swallowtail or other similar purchased seed. This seed was from a seed swap and may not have been viable.)

Tender Perennial (Michigan)
Pollinators, Natives, Wildflowers
Tender perennial, grown as an annual, received from Kirk Jones. New to me in 2023. Makes an excellent cut flower, bouquet flower with orange-red flowers accented with yellow hoods. BIG PLUS: a very long blooming season, early summer to fall. In the tropics, it is an evergreen subshrub.

Excellent pollinator: butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and other beneficial insects.
June 3, 2023: Obtained plant (Received from Kirk Jones, former PG director who used to run a cut flower business. He recommends this plant for cut flower bouquets.)
June 8, 2023: Transplanted (Planted in north flower bed by the Pennsylvania Sedge and wildflowers.)

Tender Perennial (Michigan)
Pollinators, Natives, Wildflowers
Seeds from seed swap, Silky red and yellow. Perennial grown as annual. Hardy only to Zone 9a. Full Sun; Plant Height: 24 - 36 inches, Plant Spread: 18 - 24 inches
Flowers: Showy, Fragrant Flower Color: Yellow, Red-Orange
Flower Time: Late summer or early fall
Attracts pollinators including Hummingbirds
Leaves are poisonous

Plant your butterfly weed plants approximately 12 to 18 inches apart in well-drained garden soil. Although they can be grown in most soil types, these plants enjoy sandy soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0 to 7.0).

For the first year after planting, give 1 inch of extra water each week. Once established, the plants are drought-tolerant and may only need monthly watering or none extra in temperate zones.
March 31, 2022: Seeds sown (WS in jug alongside Winecup (Callirhoe involucrata).
