lauribob's Plant List: Here & There

A note from lauribob
I am not interested in selling or trading live plants. I do save seeds once in awhile and would be willing to trade those.

2017: Planted on the chicken yard fence, where the 2 fences meet. It isn't doing well here at all, I think it needs more sun.

A bunch of these just popped up in one of my gardens.

Not convinced this is what I have. Mine is too tall and while contorted, is not weeping. Try to confirm ID - may have been mismarked or something.

Two biggies from Knutson that was supposed to be cotton-free. They're worse than the regular cottonwoods. They have grown really huge.

In the chicken yard. Seeded from compost. It was doing really well for a few years, but still spindly. We neglected to thin the fruit one year and didn't stake it well. It's a mess now from the branches ripping off.

2015 moved one from lower yard to front bank. Hot summer, don't know if it made it or not.

Enough already! There was some question as to whether this is correct. Baldhips roses are also native in the county. I'm pretty certain these are nootka - they're taller bushes, the hips aren't bald, and they're in the local native list, so are probably more common.

Willow (Salix)

The one in the yard started out as a weeping willow, but died back to the rootstock because we didn't have hosebibs yet. (I didn't know they grafted willows!) I took cuttings off that tree and planted some in the pasture along the fence. Only one made it, of course right next to the weeping willow I planted there as well.
2023: In the winter from hell, one of the bigger branches snapped. The snow is gone and it's just kind of hanging there. We're going to try to jerk it down and carry on. Poor thing, but I really like it for privacy.
2022: Well, it's still here. So far it seems healthy enough, although we probably will need to take it down at some point. For right now, it's provided much needed privacy and shade. We have new neighbors as well, so it's nice to have the buffer.
2020: Early snowstorm in November caused a huge chunk of the tree by the house to split off. We had Dennis come out and cut it up, chip it, and take a lot of the larger branches off. We will decide what to do in the spring. I'm kind of heartbroken to see our shade tree go down, but Greg is OK with it - he doesn't like the messiness.

I talked to someone at the extension service and they recommended taking the whole tree down due to rot getting into the damaged area. Definitely time for a new shade tree here in the early spring. As big a one as we can afford to put in.

2 level pruning - one side horses, one side deer.
