Jupiter's Beard (Centranthus ruber) |
Prev Dead Zone |
Z5 next to the garage. These lived for many years and were so jolly. I don't think there is a single one left.
Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) |
Prev Dead Zone |
Z5: By the spirea & lamb's ears. Planted at the back, near the garage wall. It never amounted to anything, while the other one has thrived. Spring 2019, pulled out the dead stalk.
Clematis (Clematis recta Serious Black™) |
Prev Dead Zone |
Corner: This was by the lilac and came up OK. It got hammered by hail and heavy rain (as a baby) and I hoped it would come back, but alas.
Tickseed (Coreopsis Big Bang™ Mercury Rising) |
Prev Dead Zone |
Z5: By the porch 2019: Can't find it |
||
Threadleaf Coreopsis (Coreopsis verticillata 'Zesty Zinger') |
Prev Dead Zone |
Corner: 2018 planted from bareroot. It came up and looked fine and then we got a rain/hail deluge. It didn't make it.
Brass Buttons (Cotula squalida 'Platt's Black') |
Prev Dead Zone |
Rocks. These are looking sad. The tag on these always says "for between stepping stones" I find that hard to picture since they seem to dry up wherever I try them. They are real pretty. 2018- the one at the far east end is alive. Update: The damn gophers decided to move into the rock garden. They're gone. |
||
Little Pickles (Crassothonna capensis) |
Prev Dead Zone |
2018 Planted 3 of these in the rock garden. None of them made it through the winter. Too bad - they were really cute.
Sedum (Crassula pellucida subsp. marginalis 'Petite Bicolor') |
Prev Dead Zone |
Rocks: Planted 2018 - 2 plants, back part of steps section They didn't make it through the first winter. |
||
Daphne |
Prev Dead Zone |
I had this in the Z5 garden for a few years. It never got very big, but it was NOID, so maybe it was a small cultivar. It smelled wonderful, but was short-lived.
Ice Plant (Delosperma floribundum 'Stardust') |
Prev Dead Zone |
I haven't had much luck with any ice plant coming back in the spring. I don't think they appreciate being buried under all that roof snow all winter. 2019: I did manage to get a few going from seed. 5 planted in the rocks. 2020: None of them made it through the winter. |
||
Tufted Hair Grass (Deschampsia cespitosa 'Northern Lights') |
Prev Dead Zone Grasses |
I don't have much luck with this grass. I've planted at least 3 of them and they haven't been long-lived for me. I had 2 by the GH, but I had to dig the whole section up due to neglect. I didn't see them anywhere.
Pinks (Dianthus Cosmic™ Pink Swirl) |
Prev Dead Zone |
This was a really pretty one - GH. Woke up dead one spring.
Carnation (Dianthus Devon Cottage™ Blushing Maiden) |
Prev Dead Zone |
2022: Was on the south side of the GH. Had to dig up the whole area. I didn't find it.
Pink (Dianthus chinensis) |
Have Aspen Here & There Rocks Dead Zone |
Aspen: These decided to be here all on their own, growing out of the lawn at the foot of the stairs, kind of mixed in with the creeping thyme. H&T: Under the sumac and into the lawn. Rocks: I didn't plant them here either, but they brighten things up while in bloom. 2020: There are really a lot of these here now. I think they're jolly so they can mostly all stay. Z5: These were around the circle, but I don't see them anymore. |
||
White Fringed Bleeding-heart (Dicentra eximia 'Snowdrift') |
Prev Dead Zone |
Front. This did well for a number of years before it got crowded out by the darmera and other thugs
Sea Holly (Eryngium planum) |
Have Crabapple Front Bank Dead Zone |
Gone from the Corner. Not sure if there's any left in the CA garden either.
Euphorbia Excalibur |
Prev Dead Zone |
Z5: This was growing in the dry area and was doing really well - big and robust. Then it woke up dead. Conflicting zone information
Euphorbia (Euphorbia x martini Tiny Tim) |
Have Dead Zone |
Z5: 2018 Planted in the circle, by the siberian iris. 2020 it's gone
Persian Fritillary (Fritillaria persica) |
Prev Dead Zone |
Corner: These were really pretty - deep, dark purple bells.
Blanket Flower (Gaillardia pulchella) |
Prev Dead Zone |
Z5: These were at the end of the garage for years. They're gone now and I miss them. |
