Purple Coneflower

Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea)

Rabbits got to my first couple. Ate all the flowers the first night I brought them home. Am trying to nurse them back to health, but the heat/drought has made conditions unfavorable. That said, I planted some from seed this spring. They have great foliage but have not yet produced any flowers. Maybe next year?

This guy survived the freeze and was a little sluggish in the spring. I didn't really give it too much special attention post-spring, but it has really shined as the heat has increased. One of the few blooming right now and has attracted some butterfly and hummingbird attention.

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus 'Cinnamon Sun')

Somewhat surprisingly this did not do well for me. At first, I underestimated the deer interest, although the plant rapidly grew back new flowers. While they like full sun, apparently the Texas heat was a little too much for these guys...after blooming they didn't really seed out as much as expected and withered pretty quickly. Not sure this one I can plant reliably...if I do, I'll have to give either morning or afternoon sun only.

I planted this plant this spring in a bed that receives mostly shade. It has done great, blooming multiple times. I'm told the pollinators like it but I haven't yet seen any hummingbird or bee activity by it. I did take a cutting about a month ago, checked on it today and it has nice roots and looks great - so I am hoping to have a couple more next year!

Hasn't bloomed for me yet and does seem to show water weariness a little more than a "regular" shrimp plant. Maybe it needs a little more sun to bloom? In dappled shade...
