Digging Deeper Hey, Waiter! There's a Flounder in my Tomato! Consumer advocates have been calling for legislation requiring companies to label genetically engineered foods. And there are some very good reasons for doing so. For example, little is known about the effects of introducing genes from common allergens into other foods. If one or more peanut genes is inserted into another crop, will consumption of that crop induce an allergic reaction in susceptible people? One of the more interesting experiments involves inserting genes from flounder-that's right, the fish-into tomatoes to increase frost resistance. Ask your vegetarian students how they will feel about this!
