[ Coleus (Coleus scutellarioides 'Caracas') | Posted on August 29, 2014 ]

This is a medium to small coleus. In the shade the colors are more understated, but in full sun, in my zone 3 garden, there is an explosion of color and it becomes a real eye catcher. As most coleuses do, it requires moist soil to look its best.

[ Euphorbia (Euphorbia x martini 'Ascot Rainbow') | Posted on August 25, 2014 ]

This euphorbia has been thriving in a pot through a very cool summer. The colors in it have been very bright and colorful -- maybe deeper colors because of the cool, as some of the other Euphorbias do. Although its minimum hardiness is supposed to be zone 6, I will take cuttings, but I will also plant it to see whether it will survive the winter in zone 3 with heavy mulch.

[ Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Amber Glow') | Posted on August 20, 2014 ]

Amber Glow is a miniature variety of Eastern Arborvitae. It prefers well drained soil and its growth averages about 1 inch a year. It has glowing gold overlaid foliage and is evergreen. Great plant for a rock garden.

[ Sawara Cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Gold Dust') | Posted on August 20, 2014 ]

Very miniature Chamaecyparis, also known as Sawara Cypress. Foliage is tightly congested with gold variegation sprinkled through its dark green leaves. Slow growing, height and spread in 10 years: 4"x10".

[ Lily (Lilium 'Madame Butterfly') | Posted on August 7, 2014 ]

Most of the petals on this pretty and dainty lily have strong recurve, but sometimes they are more flat, reminiscent of a butterfly in flight.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Born to Reign') | Posted on August 5, 2014 ]

This beautiful daylily has a dark velvet undercoating that adds depth and color.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Cerulean Warbler') | Posted on July 23, 2014 ]

This daylily is an early morning opener even on colder days. Its colors are very bright and attention getting when it first opens, but by midday it has faded to a pale version of its earlier self. Still very attractive even then, however.

[ Variegated Garden Phlox (Phlox paniculata 'Goldmine') | Posted on March 29, 2014 ]

This cultivar is very showy and long blooming. The color of the variegation in the leaves makes the color of the flowers seem more intense. They are not as long lived as the non-variegated Phlox.

[ African Violet (Streptocarpus 'Lacy Lass') | Posted on December 5, 2013 ]

The leaves are wavy and showy as well as the flowers on this variety.

[ Grape (Vitis 'Kay Gray') | Posted on October 5, 2013 ]

Small table grape that is very attractive to wasps. It's hard to get a full cluster and even to harvest because of that.

[ Corn (Zea mays subsp. mays 'Incredible') | Posted on September 2, 2013 ]

This corn IS incredible. Long filled-in ears of sweet, tender corn, which holds its flavor even when it gets a little overgrown. My favorite corn to date.

[ Lily Flowering Tulip (Tulipa 'Mariette') | Posted on June 5, 2013 ]

Very long flowering tulip variety

[ Tarda Tulip (Tulipa urumiensis) | Posted on May 20, 2013 ]

This bulb is a very prolific spreader .

[ Anise Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum 'Golden Jubilee') | Posted on April 19, 2013 ]

This plant doesn't live over in my zone 3 garden but does seed itself and bloom the first year from that seeding.

[ Swedish Ivy (Plectranthus forsteri 'Green on Green') | Posted on February 23, 2013 ]

The leaf color brightens and intensifies with brighter light.

[ American Mountain Ash (Sorbus americana) | Posted on January 26, 2013 ]

This tree is especially vulnerable to sap sucker woodpeckers.

[ Mentzelia involucrata var. involucrata | Posted on January 6, 2013 ]

It's nightblooming through most of its bloom cycle, and highly scented.

[ Beardtongue (Penstemon barbatus 'Navigator Mix') | Posted on December 6, 2012 ]

This variety blooms all summer if it is consistently deadheaded.

[ African Violet (Streptocarpus 'Apache Heartbeat') | Posted on October 24, 2012 ]

The leaf color toward the center of the plant gets more pink as it gets bigger. The color of the leaf is very complimentary to the color of the bloom.

[ White Fringed Bleeding-heart (Dicentra eximia 'Snowdrift') | Posted on October 7, 2012 ]

It blooms all summer if kept moist.
