[ Japanese Hedge Parsley (Torilis japonica) | Posted on July 13, 2022 ]

This plant is becoming very invasive in my area, and in other areas of the country as well. I've been trying to rid my property of it for several years now, and it just seems to get worse every year. This year it is trying to take over.

The seeds are small round burrs and they stick to wildlife, which spreads them easily.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Persian Market') | Posted on August 30, 2016 ]

Found a rebloom scape today. Wasn't expecting that!

[ Hardy Hibiscus (Hibiscus moscheutos) | Posted on May 31, 2016 ]

The foliage may be used as a butterfly larval host by Hairstreaks, Blues, Coppers, and others.

[ Lewis' Mockorange (Philadelphus lewisii) | Posted on April 26, 2016 ]

According to Idaho Mountain Wildflowers, by A. Scott Earle and Jane Lundin, Lewis' mock orange was collected by Meriwether Lewis along the Clearwater River on May 6, 1806, and again on July 4, 1806, on the Bitterroot River.

I live along the Clearwater River, so I had to have it! I planted 5 today, and I'm looking forward to the wonderful scent filling the air. In Idaho, the plant is known as Syringa.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Entrapment') | Posted on July 20, 2015 ]

I have had very little success at getting seed pods to mature this year due to 3 weeks in a row of 100-degree-plus heat. I didn't put any pollen on Entrapment, but it is covered in bee pods! Appears to be a very easy pod parent, as there are almost no other bee pods in the garden. I have no idea whether the seeds will produce any good seedlings, but I will try planting a few if I don't get any seeds from the few pods that are growing on the other plants.

Entrapment makes a very pretty clump, and it has done well for me. It is always covered in blooms and multiplies nicely. It always looks best in the morning, as most others do, but the blooms don't look so great at the end of a hot day. But, it is a keeper!

[ Hard-shelled Gourd (Lagenaria siceraria 'Speckled Swan') | Posted on July 19, 2015 ]

I'm growing this gourd for the first time this year. I was curious about how it curved into the swan shape, since it didn't seem like it was possible to do that if it was climbing. I thought that in order for the swan shape to be achieved, it would have to be grown without climbing. I was very surprised to see that the gourd, when it is small, curls around the branch so that it hangs down on the opposite side of where it starts growing! Makes perfect sense now! The vine has been a very fast grower, much faster than any other gourds I am growing this year. It is in a large half-barrel type planter and is doing really well.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Jolyene Nichole') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

I love the bloom on Jolyene Nichole, but the scape is way too short. I could never get rid of it, though, because the blooms have been worth keeping it. They are always perfect! I grew it originally in my zone 5a garden and could barely find the blooms because they were buried in the foliage. I moved it to zone 7a, and they are now tall enough to see. Still too short, but better!

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Irish Elf') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

The most adorable little yellow blooms that I've ever seen! Even though the scapes seem somewhat tall, compared to the size of the bloom, it looks perfect!

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Gerda Brooker') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

Gerda Brooker has beautiful blooms, but the plant has struggled for me. It seems as if it is always the last one to start growing every spring, and I always think that I've lost it, but it just takes its time showing up. It hasn't increased any in the few years that I've had it, but I've kept it because it does have a very nice bloom. I've moved it from zone 5a to zone 7a, and that hasn't made any difference.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Frankly Scarlet') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

This is the only daylily that ever rebloomed for me in my zone 5a garden. It only did so the first year that I had it, but I was happy that it did!. The red holds up really well, and is just as pretty at the end of the day as it is in the morning. It made a large clump really quickly!

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Entrapment') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

Entrapment has grown well for me, but it is one of those daylilies that has faded badly by the end of the day.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Dublin Elaine') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

I purchased this daylily at a big box store, as Dream Souffle, grown by All American Winners. I wanted to use it for hybridizing, but realized after I had it planted that Dream Souffle wasn't a registered daylily. I refused to use it for hybridizing at that point, since I felt that the plant was "stolen" and had a trademark added to the name. I was thrilled when someone was able to put the real name on it for me, because I really love it!

It bloomed very well the first year I had it, and then it took a year off without blooming, but multiplied like crazy. It had fewer blooms the third year than the first year, but the plant was still doing great, and it multiplied more. I've since moved from zone 5a to 7a, and it is much happier here. Last year and this year both, I thought it wasn't going to bloom, but all of a sudden the scapes almost bolted to growing height! It has just started blooming for me, and it is doing great! Now that I know the real name, I look forward to using it for hybridizing with my other doubles.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Crimson Pirate') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

Crimson Pirate glows! I have never been able to get an accurate picture of the color, and my camera takes very accurate pictures. There is just something special about this one that won't let me capture it the way it looks in person. I actually got this as the wrong plant, and luckily it is very commonly grown, so the ID was easy to get. I like it much better than the one I was purchasing! Can't imagine the garden without it now.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Condilla') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

This is the daylily that got me to appreciate orange daylilies! It is a beautiful shade of orange, and I don't think I've ever had a bloom that wasn't a double. It always opens very well, and the clump blooms for a very long time. Increase has been great as well.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Chicken on the Run') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

Chicken on the Run is a recent addition to my garden, and it is quickly becoming a favorite, because of the color! I don't have anything else quite like it, and the color is stunning! Love the name, too! The blooms have all been perfect!

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Bama Music') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

This has been a favorite daylily of mine, since seeing the first bloom. It's beautiful! The color has always been perfect, and the plant has performed very well for me. It is a bit taller in my zone 7a garden than it was in my 5a garden, but overall, it has performed equally well in both zones. I will never get rid of this one!

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Barbara Mitchell') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

I've had many amazing blooms from Barbara Mitchell. It makes a very beautiful clump, and is covered with blooms all season. It has increased very quickly for me, in both my zone 5a garden, and in my zone 7a garden. It is a bit taller in the 7a garden, but not too short in the colder zone. It has been a perfect plant, and I have been very happy with it.

If you love pastel pink daylilies, this would be a great addition to your garden!

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Neon Flamingo') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

Neon Flamingo was a recent addition to my garden this year, and I wasn't expecting it to bloom, but it did, and I couldn't believe how amazing it was! The color almost glows! I can't wait until next year, when it should be closer to its registered height. It has put on an amazing show, and should only improve from here on out!

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Frans Hals') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

Frans Hals has been a great performer for me, and really adds a lot of color to the garden! I always smile when I see it blooming, which it does really well! It has also increased very fast for me, which is a plus! I will always have this one in my garden.

Edited to add that there are a lot of prolifs on the clump this year! Way more than on any other daylily I have. It's also looking to be a bud builder this year.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Cherokee Star') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

If you are only going to grow one red daylily, you may want to consider this one. The color is outstanding! It looks like red velvet to me, and has really helped me to appreciate red flowers. It adds a burst of brightness to the garden, and I really love it!
