[ Wax Plant (Hoya fungii) | Posted on December 13, 2015 ]

Fungii has been one of my fastest growing hoyas. It's very tolerant and produces blooms that have a light fragrance. The leaves and patterns vary so much on this plant and I'm constantly unwrapping it from other hoyas and plants. It's definitely a great beginners' hoya.

[ Floribunda Petunia (Petunia 'Celebrity Blue') | Posted on September 29, 2015 ]

This actually has more of a deep purple color. Most petunias melt when summer arrives here, but this one survived in dappled shade. I started it from seed in late spring and had my first bloom a few days ago. The bloom actually has a light fragrance that's especially noticeable late afternoon and evening.

[ Dwarf Banana (Musa acuminata 'Dwarf Namwah') | Posted on June 10, 2015 ]

I've had this variety in the ground for three years now. It's definitely root hardy in zone 8a and is a type ladyfinger banana. Even though it's called dwarf, it can still grow 10-12 ft. It's often confused with ' Ice Cream' banana but dwarf namwah has more pink/ red on the pseudostem.

[ Banana (Musa 'Orinoco') | Posted on June 10, 2015 ]

Very hardy banana plant that is neither a dessert banana nor a plantain. It's root hardy in my area and a vigorous grower. It's fairly drought tolerant compared to most bananas, but it still needs lots of water. I give all my bananas composted cow manure and potassium nitrate. Bananas need potassium-rich soils to thrive. It can grow 12-16' tall.

[ Grand Crinum Lily (Crinum asiaticum) | Posted on May 13, 2015 ]

I've had this plant in my zone 8a garden for 3 years. It dies down to the ground every winter, but returns in spring. It's planted on the southwest corner of my house, and it survives without any type of protection.

[ Sweetheart Hoya (Hoya kerrii) | Posted on December 25, 2014 ]

Stems are very stiff compared to a lot of other hoyas.

[ Wax Plant (Hoya 'Nong Nooch') | Posted on December 25, 2014 ]

This is part of the finlaysonii family. It's supposed to have bigger leaves and faster growth than the regular finlaysonii.

[ Wax Plant (Hoya australis 'Lisa') | Posted on December 25, 2014 ]

Variegated, compact, slow growing cultivar.

[ Snow Bamboo (Phyllostachys nuda) | Posted on April 25, 2014 ]

This bamboo supposedly doesn't do well in hot climate areas, but I've seen huge groves of it in a neighboring city. The drought has taken a toll on most of those groves, but mine has been doing pretty well. I've had it for three years and it's slowly starting to run. I get new shoots in spring and then a few more in fall.

[ Peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Festiva Maxima') | Posted on January 5, 2013 ]

The winters can be very mild here, so I rarely see blooms.

[ Amaryllis (Hippeastrum vittatum) | Posted on November 10, 2012 ]

This amaryllis seems to multiply much faster than the Dutch Hybrids. I got this last year from a local gardener and 1 bulb produced 5 offsets

[ Red Banana Tree (Musa sumatrana 'Rojo') | Posted on August 9, 2012 ]

I grew this plant a couple of years ago, and I found out the hard way last year during a bad drought that this variety seems to be more sensitive to sunlight here in Texas. I grow it in an area that gets sun in the morning and shade during the afternoon.

[ Dragonfruit (Selenicereus monacanthus) | Posted on July 19, 2012 ]

I started these plants from cuttings last year. I've given away several cuttings since then because some of the plants are over 6 feet tall. It grows very fast once established and loves the heat and humidity. I've read the plant has to be at least 10lbs before it produces fruit.

[ Oleander (Nerium oleander 'Peach Blossom') | Posted on July 10, 2012 ]

I've read on the internet the minimum zone requirement is 9a. I live on the borderline of 7b and 8a, and even during the worst winters, the tender tips freeze, but not the older leaves. I have mine planted on the west side of my house in an exposed area and it has done well for 10 years. It’s very drought tolerant too. I never water it, even during bad droughts.
