[ Kale (Brassica oleracea var. viridis 'Starbor') | Posted on May 4, 2014 ]

Can be grown indoors in a sunny windowsill for baby salad leaves. Grow outside for mature leaves.

[ Heliotrope (Heliotropium arborescens 'Mini Marine') | Posted on May 3, 2014 ]

Seeds for this plant last a long time if kept in the refrigerator. I started some this winter from seeds I bought in 1997!

[ Delphinium grandiflorum 'Amour' | Posted on May 3, 2014 ]

The seed packet said this variety is a half hardy annual and will only overwinter in mild climates. I planted 3 last year and 2 have returned despite the horribly snowy & cold winter. Oddly, the one plant that was mulched did not return. The other 2 were just covered in fallen leaves.

[ Nemesia (Nemesia strumosa 'Paintbox') | Posted on May 3, 2014 ]

I grew Nemesia Opal Innocence last year (not sure if it survived the winter yet) and liked it so much that I decided to start Nemesia Paintbox seeds over the winter. The seeds were from 2004, so I wasn't sure whether they would even grow. I ended up with 7 plants. So far 4 have bloomed and they are all different colors. All are bicolors in shades of pink and purple with some white. The flowers are held in clusters and start out small but seem to get larger over time. They are supposed to flower mid-summer until fall. My seeds were started in January and were starting to bloom in April! They are very colorful and they branch well without pinching. The flowers look good even after heavy rain and they last quite a while. I have these planted next to spring bulbs so that, as they die back, the Nemesias cover the dying foliage. They are a great way to add some color to front borders and containers. Highly recommended!

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Becky Lynn') | Posted on March 22, 2014 ]

I have grown Becky Lynn in my garden for many years now. I love the blooms! I was surprised to see that it is supposed to bloom extra early. In my garden I would call it Midseason-Late! I have it planted on an exposed slope that gets mostly morning sun. Until this past year I never mulched or fertilized it and it has always performed well for me. Recommended!

[ Toad Flax (Linaria maroccana 'Dwarf Fairy Bouquet Mix') | Posted on July 23, 2013 ]

If you are looking for an easy-to-grow filler plant for the front of your border, try Linaria Fairy Bouquet. The plants grow 9-12" tall and have a nice bushy habit in full sun. The flowers resemble tiny snapdragons and this particular mix comes with a wide variety of colors (I've only posted pictures of 2 colors, but there are many more). The best thing about this plant is that it blooms all summer long without deadheading! Without sufficient watering, the plants will start to go dormant in very high temperatures. But my plants just survived a 7-day heatwave with once a day watering and are now blooming again. They don't seem to be bothered by acidic soil because some of mine are planted beneath a pine tree where I have trouble growing other annuals.

[ Annual Mallow (Malva trimestris 'Dwarf Pink Blush') | Posted on July 16, 2013 ]

Lavatera is a favorite of mine because the plants form compact bushes and are covered in flowers most of the summer. I have Dwarf Pink Blush planted in full sun, partial sun & morning sun only. The plant grows taller in full sun but can require staking if you have lots of wind. I prefer its habit in partial afternoon sun where it is somewhat shorter but just as bushy. The plant grown in morning sun is lanky and tall with very few blooms.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Oriental Silk') | Posted on July 11, 2013 ]

For the past two years I've grown Oriental Silk, and I find that when the plant first starts blooming, the flowers are clear and bright. However, when the last few flowers open, they are generally paler and the flowers tend to have purple spots along the edges of the petals (although not the sepals). It doesn't appear to be caused by weather since this has happened two years in a row and this year was very different weather-wise from last year. I actually enjoy the later blooms more because with their size and spots they remind me of true lilies.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Double Cutie') | Posted on July 2, 2013 ]

While I love the flowers of Double Cutie, I have to say it is one of the worst performing daylilies in my garden. Every year I get 1-2 blooms that always seem to open on the same day. That's it! The plant seems happy and healthy and has multiplied well in 2 years. But if I can't get it to bloom more than 1 day a year it will have to go. Of all my miniatures this one does the worst in my zone 7a garden with a western exposure.

Edited to add that after a schedule of regular watering and fertilizer starting in Fall 2013 I have gotten many more blooms in 2014 as compared to previous years. The flowers are, however, significantly smaller. Definitely needs pampering to perform decently.

[ Coral Bells (Heuchera 'Lime Rickey') | Posted on July 1, 2013 ]

I didn't know anything about Coral Bells when I bought this plant. I was trying to find something that would grow well under a pine tree. Lime Rickey has done very well getting late afternoon sun and competes quite well with the pine tree in a very confined space (I'm an urban gardener). The color is pretty all year round. Older leaves tend to have a reddish tint to them but the new ones are a beautiful shade of green. It has been in this space for 3 years now and every year it just keeps getting better!

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Butterscotch Ruffles') | Posted on June 20, 2013 ]

I love Butterscotch Ruffles. It is by far the earliest bloomer that I have. It has been blooming since June 5th and is still going strong! The flowers are a beautiful peach shade for me in NY. I originally bought it in NC, where the blooms were a deeper shade of orange bordering on tan. But it seems that most of my flowers are paler up north, despite being in full sun.
