[ Onosma paniculatum | Posted on December 8, 2012 ]

Seeds germinated at room temperature in about a week without pretreatment.

[ Alpine Bellflower (Campanula topaliana) | Posted on December 7, 2012 ]

This species is rather unusual among Campanula in that the seeds germinate within about a week at room temperature, while most other Campanula spp. seeds require stratification. Has been monocarpic for me (unfortunately).

[ Cliff-Green (Paxistima canbyi) | Posted on December 7, 2012 ]

A useful evergreen groundcover; insignificant flowers.

[ Needleleaf Fleabane (Erigeron nematophyllus) | Posted on December 7, 2012 ]

Seed germinated in 9 days at room temperature; no pretreatment.

[ Silver Spreader (Artemisia alpina) | Posted on December 7, 2012 ]

A dwarf alpine species from Turkey; seeds germinated in 4 days at room temperature, no pretreatment.

[ Scutellaria megalaspis | Posted on December 6, 2012 ]

Seeds germinated in 6 days at room temperature; no pretreatment.

[ Yellow Giant Scabious (Cephalaria gigantea) | Posted on December 6, 2012 ]

An extremely tall (~8' here) perennial with sturdy stems; despite its imposing size, it is rather "airy" and hard to photograph! The basal plant is also huge, with 3-4 foot long arching stems.

[ Rhubarb (Rheum rhizostachyum) | Posted on December 6, 2012 ]

A dwarf alpine rhubarb.

[ Carline Thistle (Carlina acaulis) | Posted on December 6, 2012 ]

A European alpine thistle that is decorative and useful for late bloom; flowers last throughout the winter.

[ Encrusted Saxifrage (Saxifraga paniculata 'Minutifolia') | Posted on December 6, 2012 ]

As the name suggests, 'Minutifolia' forms leaf rosettes that are tiny as compared to regular S. paniculata.

[ Spring Vetch (Lathyrus vernus) | Posted on December 6, 2012 ]

A non-vining Lathyrus species.

[ Spring Vetch (Lathyrus vernus) | Posted on December 6, 2012 ]

This subspecies is distinguished from the species by its narrow foliage.

[ Anemone reflexa | Posted on December 5, 2012 ]

Formerly - and more descriptively - Anemone trifoliata.

[ Tropical Water Lily (Nymphaea 'Madame Ganna Walska') | Posted on December 3, 2012 ]

A viviparous tropical that is suitable for the smaller pond.

[ Poterium dodecandrum | Posted on December 2, 2012 ]

Sanguisorba dodecandra is native over a small range in the alps of mainland Italy. It is said to occur in humid shrubland, near shaded wet habitats, and in riparian areas; despite that, it seems to tolerate relatively low soil moisture and humidity here.

[ Dianthus (Dianthus monspessulanus) | Posted on December 2, 2012 ]

Very fragrant with a perfume scent rather than the usual clove scent of most Dianthus.

[ Dianthus (Dianthus leucophaeus) | Posted on December 2, 2012 ]

An alpine Dianthus that is slightly odd in that the flowers open at dusk or in cloudy conditions; fragrant. The flowers are not very showy, compared to most other Dianthus species.

[ Donkey Tail (Euphorbia myrsinites) | Posted on December 2, 2012 ]

Seeds are ejected explosively and so can come up some distance from parent plant. Hardy in Calgary, AB (zone 3); depending on position, may be root hardy to completely hardy and evergreen; wintered-over stems die back after flowering and are replaced by new growth.
Has naturalized and is an invasive weed in many states and one province.

[ Alpine Sea Holly (Eryngium alpinum) | Posted on December 1, 2012 ]

Deno found that it germinates at room temperature in either light or dark; stratification not required (Seed Germination Theory and Practice, Dr. N. Deno).

[ Menzies' Penstemon (Penstemon davidsonii var. menziesii) | Posted on December 1, 2012 ]

According to Lodewick and Lodewick (Key to the Genus Penstemon), distinguished from Penstemon davidsonii by "leaves toothed at least near tip", and found from SW BC (at sea level), south to Mt. Rainier on the west side of the Cascade Range, and in the Olympic Mts. in Washington.
