[ Giant Hyssop (Agastache 'Purple Haze') | Posted on August 23, 2014 ]

Purple Haze isn't as visible in my yard as some other agastaches that I''ve grown. Individual blossoms are small and dainty. It's pretty and airy, but not noticeable unless you are close to the plant. The hummingbirds, however, find it easily .

[ Bacopa (Sutera cordata Blutopia®) | Posted on August 23, 2014 ]

I find bacopa very easy to grow from seed. It makes a nice filler for hanging baskets or containers. It seems to tolerate sun or part shade in my zone 6 yard, but blooms more with increased amounts of sun.

[ Blackcurrant Sage (Salvia microphylla 'Hot Lips') | Posted on July 28, 2014 ]

I have this plant in a container near my front porch and the hummingbirds visit it often. It has produced mostly solid red blossoms with just a few bicolor ones.

I have not found any seeds on this plant all summer, though I see that @duane456 posted a photo of seeds. Does it really set seeds? My salvia coral nymph is setting seeds fast now that the weather has cooled and days are getting so short, but I see none on Hot Lips.

[ Dragon Wing Begonia (Begonia Dragon Wing® Pink) | Posted on November 8, 2012 ]

This plant did very well for me in a part-sun location in my zone 6 yard. In nearly full shade, it did not thrive. When happy with its sun exposure, this plant thrives, grows large, and blooms heavily throughout a hot summer. It is relatively easy to grow from seed, even for this begonia-challenged gardener.

This plant does not produce seeds, which probably accounts for its heavy, prolonged blooming.

[ California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) | Posted on November 8, 2012 ]

I generally don't deadhead, and continue to find a few volunteers each year. They tolerate heat and drought well, and are very resilient. They also wintersow well.

[ Sempervivum | Posted on August 25, 2012 ]

Wintersows well. Germination rate very high. Seedlings are slow growing.

[ Cranesbill (Geranium wlassovianum) | Posted on August 11, 2012 ]

Geranium wlassovianum has been blooming since May, even in exceptional heat and drought here. Most of the summer it has been covered with blossoms without any deadheading or trimming. Blossoms are medium purple, very similar in color to Geranium Rozanne. It maintains a neater look than my Geranium Rozanne due to exceptionally pretty foliage. Mine were wintersown during winter 2010-2011.

Foliage takes on a red shade during fall.

[ Flowering Tobacco (Nicotiana alata) | Posted on July 24, 2012 ]

Nicotiana alata flowers open at night, beginning at dusk. When open, flowers are fragrant.

It is a tall plant which routinely requires secure staking in my yard. It is also a favorite of hummingbirds.

[ Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia Pink Velour®) | Posted on July 19, 2012 ]

My husband bought me this plant for my birthday three years ago. The tag said hardy to zone 7. (We live in zone 6). Planted in a protected spot close to the house, it has overwintered to return through two winters.

Pink Velour is a beautiful plant, whose bright hot pink color stands out in sun or part shade. Highly recommended, easy-care plant.

[ Perennial Tickseed (Coreopsis 'Center Stage') | Posted on July 11, 2012 ]

My plant has produced flowers of a more pink shade rather than the red shade shown in the grower's photo, but it's a pretty threadleaf coreopsis, which has bloomed heavily for months despite 100° heat and drought.

It is possible that the vendor sent me the wrong plant, or maybe the color has been bleached by the unrelenting hot sun and drought that we've had all summer.

[ Maiden Pink (Dianthus deltoides 'Arctic Fire') | Posted on June 4, 2012 ]

These bloom most heavily in spring to early summer. If sheared back after the first bloom they do put out an occasional flower in summer. They spread to form a thick mat, which remains a healthy green color through the hot summer weather.

Close-up photos of this plant show the pretty color. However, each flower is tiny, and from a distance can simply look like tiny white blooms.

[ Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta 'Becky Mix') | Posted on March 28, 2012 ]

Becky is a large-flowered dwarf selection, which blooms heavily. Colors vary from yellow with a dark eye to yellow or gold with brown markings and yellow with large orange markings around the eye. Also, they seem to cross-pollinate readily, so the color changes from year to year.

Though listed as hardy to zone 5, they might perform better when used as annuals. Drought tolerant. Works well in front of a flower bed. They reseed heavily for me.

[ Coleus (Coleus scutellarioides ColorBlaze® Sedona) | Posted on March 28, 2012 ]

I find Sedona to be among the brightest of the coleuses with a bright palette of colors. In sun, the foliage can appear iridescent and it glows a bright red-orange color. In shade, the color is subdued and it can look faded and muddy.

Sedona has the potential to be a large plant, so plan accordingly when you plant it.

[ Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus 'Chimes Bronze') | Posted on February 26, 2012 ]

Chimes Bronze is a cute little snapdragon, topping out at around 6-8" in height. Its bright-colored flowers bloom in early summer and, if deadheaded, rebloom in late summer or early fall, when temperatures start to moderate. It rarely puts out a flower in the worst heat of summer.

Commonly considered annuals, snapdragons often overwinter for me in my zone 6 yard, though not reliably. Often the upper part of the plant becomes mushy in winter, but the lower part of the plant remains evergreen throughout winter. Trimming back in spring encourages new growth to resume for another year of flowers.

[ Garden Nasturtiums (Tropaeolum majus) | Posted on February 6, 2012 ]

Most growing information I've seen recommends full sun and poor dry soil for nasturtium. However, I find that mine do best with a little part-shade and occasional water.

[ Sedum (Hylotelephium spectabile 'Herbstfreude') | Posted on January 23, 2012 ]

Sedum Autumn Joy is easily propagated by breaking off a piece, stripping it, and burying the lowest node. It needs some available soil moisture during rooting, but very little. Overwatering will cause the cutting to rot.

[ Variegated Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum 'Variegatum') | Posted on January 23, 2012 ]

Variegated Solomon's Seal is a nice choice for shady areas. Its taller, arched stems add a nice form and texture to the shade bed. It makes a nice background plant behind hostas. It spreads, but not invasively, so that each spring I can divide and move some to another area or share with friends. Its flowers are small and last a short time, so I consider it a foliage plant, whose value is its graceful form.

[ Coleus (Coleus scutellarioides 'Beckwith's Gem') | Posted on January 23, 2012 ]

New to me last year, Beckwith's Gem was a healthy coleus that seemed to thrive. I'd describe its height as medium for a coleus, but it was anxious to branch out to a full, bushy plant. The contrast of its bright yellow border to dark burgundy makes it a good choice for blending other nearby plant colors.

[ Chinese Forget-Me-Not (Cynoglossum amabile) | Posted on December 4, 2011 ]

These cute little annuals make the perfect plant to tuck into empty spots in my garden. They bloom profusely with tiny sky blue flowers (not purple). They grow in shade or with a fair amount of sun, and those in sun stand up better while those in shade tend to flop over.

It is a polite reseeder in my yard, never invasive, and it wintersows well.

[ Multiflora Spreading/Trailing Petunia (Petunia Tidal Wave® Silver) | Posted on December 4, 2011 ]

Tidal Wave Silver petunia was a 2002 AAS and Fleuroselect Quality Mark winner. Very easy to grow from seed, and it wintersows well. It is a huge spreading plant and vigorous bloomer. If it becomes leggy it can be trimmed by by up to half and it grows back and blooms better than before.
