[ Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus 'Burmese') | Posted on March 13, 2018 ]

This is the first season to plant Burmese Okra. It is reputed to be a plant that begins to bear fruit at a smaller size. The okra is supposed to also be less slimey.

[ Spring Snowflake (Leucojum vernum) | Posted on February 25, 2018 ]

This Leucojum Snowflake is a spring bloomer in zone 8a. After a rainy spring, it is in bloom at the end of February.
The bell shaped blooms have a delicate fragrance. They are currently in a container as the bed they were in had to be moved. It did not seem to affect the bloom cycle. These bulbs adapt and naturalize well. My start was shared as an heirloom passalong plant years ago by a close friend.

[ Dutch Hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis 'Roman Blue') | Posted on February 25, 2018 ]

This is an heirloom hyacinth known as Roman Hyacinth. The stalks have sparse blooms, which are spread out individually along the stalks.
The flowers have a strong and delightful Hyacinth fragrance.
In my Zone 8a, they are delivering blooms at the end of a rainy February.

[ Cos Lettuce (Lactuca sativa 'Little Gem') | Posted on February 19, 2018 ]

I find Little Gem Romaine lettuce to have an excellent taste and firm substance. It is delicious when served in a salad or on a sandwich.

Little Gem is a hardy lettuce that shakes off frost and survived two nights under frostcloth when the temperature dipped to the low teens.

It will remain on my "must grow" list.

[ Lettuce (Lactuca sativa 'Petite Rouge') | Posted on February 19, 2018 ]

This smaller Romaine lettuce has pretty color and is a fast growing lettuce. The leaves are very delicate and add little substance but a pretty color to the salad or sandwich when it is served.

[ Hot Pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Aleppo') | Posted on September 24, 2017 ]

The seeds for Aleppo pepper were generously shared. This was the first year I tried it.

This single plant was grown in a raised bed in full sun. It has many fruits on it.

I plan to let them ripen and dehydrate and grind to use as a pepper seasoning in foods.

An interesting side note, the last batch of peppers were brined overnight before drying. The ground pepper offers a salty pepper blend which is very tasty.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Tibet Appel') | Posted on June 24, 2017 ]

I have four healthy plants, grown in containers. They have performed well and received consistent water. As the Appel tomatoes begin to ripen, the skin splits open on every one of the fruits. Some split badly enough that they were inedible. Some I have been able to catch and salvage. I have even found some that are still green tomatoes that have cracked skin.

I do like the taste, but will forgo growing this tomato again. This is the first (and last) year growing the Tibet Appel tomato.

[ Bromeliad (Billbergia pyramidalis 'Kyoto') | Posted on September 28, 2012 ]

The flower bud appeared quickly, one week after moving this bromeliad into the greenhouse to acclimate it for winter.

[ Chain Plant (Callisia navicularis) | Posted on August 26, 2012 ]

This is a low growing succulent with little boat-shaped leaves of deep greenish-purple color.

This plant needs bright sun but prefers protection from direct afternoon sun.

Likes a fair amount of moisture but allow to dry out in between.

Will bloom with a delicate light purple flower in fall.

[ Variegated Cuban Oregano (Coleus amboinicus 'Variegatus') | Posted on August 22, 2012 ]

Leaves have a strong fragrance.
This plant is tender and needs to be overwintered indoors.
Easy to root from cuttings.
The variegation is stunning in flower beds.

[ Vicks Plant (Plectranthus hadiensis) | Posted on August 22, 2012 ]

This plant is easy to root. Requires little moisture and has a mellow camphor fragrance when the leaves are brushed.

[ Dwarf Pomegranate (Punica granatum 'Nana') | Posted on August 22, 2012 ]

This plant is in a container and thriving. It has bloomed all summer and developed a number of fruits.

The hummingbirds also love the blooms.

[ Lifesaver Cactus (Ceropegia zebrina subsp. insigniflora) | Posted on August 21, 2012 ]

Easy to see how it got the common name 'lifesaver'.

[ Sweet Potato Vine (Ipomoea batatas 'Lady Fingers') | Posted on August 20, 2012 ]

Beautiful vining potato vine is a rich, deep green color.
