Jan 9, 2015 9:39 PM | Pid: 667809 Explanation: This tomato, is apparently the same exact plant as "Brandywine" tomato. However, some sellers specify it as "pink" Brandywine, as to differentiate many other Brandywine tomatoes out there. There is much confusion, as the pink potato leaved (original) was listed as "Brandywine", and often put in the "red section" of listings, leading people to believe it WAS a red tomato, when it wasn't. There IS another tomato called "Red Brandywine" of which the fruit IS red, but the leaves are regular leaves. I got the seeds from a package calling it "Pink Brandywine" so I added a listing under that name. Then as I was researching the specifics for it, I found all this out. It was a Commercial pack, that probably added the "Pink" in front of the name, to differentiate it from the red version, or all the other "Brandywine" versions. Here's an excerpt about this confusion... History of the Brandywine Tomatoes in the SSE Yearbooks~ http://www.webgrower.com/information/craig_brandywine.html "1975-1981: No Listings of Brandywine 1982: Brandywine (3 listings) 1983: Brandywine (10 listings) 1984: Red Brandywine (1 listing, WI HO S, potato leaf pink) Brandywine (14 listings) 1985: Red Section: Red Brandywine (1 listing, FL ST G, WI HO S 84, potato leaf pink). Pink Section: Brandywine (22 listings). 1986: Listed in the Red section: Red Brandywine (1 listing – FL ST G, from WI HO S 84) – possible incorrectly listed – as potato leaf, large fruit. Listed in the Pink to Purple section: Brandywine (23 listings) – earliest listing OH QU B (Ben Quisenberry) 1980 – all listed as pink potato leaf, large fruit – but Quisenberry strain quoted as being best flavored. No listings for Yellow or any other Brandywines." Other strains... "Substrains, selections, and erroneous names: Glick’s Strain (first appeared with this name in 1999) Pink Brandywine ("pink" is redundant and unnecessary – listed this way once, in 1991) Joyce’s Strain (first appeared in 1995) Amish (probably a supposition; first listed in 1987) Pawer’s (an error – appeared in 1994) Sudduth’s (first listing 1996) Quisenberry’s (only one listing, 1999) Radiator Charlie’s (listed in one SSE yearbook, 1995, most likely an error) Probably crosses, selections, etc: Brandywine Sport (first listed 1990, then again in 1997) Brandywine Mutate (one listing, 1997) Brandywine Cherry (first showed up in 1998) Purple Brandywine (first listed under this name in 1998, but is in reality a stabilized variety created by Joe Bratka by crossing Brandywine with Marizol Purple – it is also known as Purple Brandy, Marizol Brandywine and Marizol Bratka)" |

Jan 8, 2015 10:21 AM | Pid: 667810 Explanation: I entered this plant based on the name given to me, but based on further research, it is the same exact variety as Pertsevidnyi Zheltyi. Being a foreign variety, the name spelling varies, via the local dialect in Germany, The Ukraine, Russia, as well as symbol sound in these languages to English letters, etc. Exerpt from a discussion about it on tomatoville... "Let me make some correction in Russion names of some varieties I've got in my seed colletion as well: Amurskij Tigr- "Amur Tiger"- striped cherry variety = Amurskiy Tigr Pertsewidnij Schelmij- “Gold Pepper-Shaped”- Super Sweet! = Pertsevidnyi Zheltyi Sacharnaja Silwa Malinowaja- “Raspberry-Colored Sugarplum” = Sakharnaya Sliva Malinovaya" "You just took one letter "т" in this Russian word as English small written letter "m", because this is the way it is written on the package, but we also write "т" as "m" in Russian writing language Желтый (Zheltyi) is "Yellow' in English. And I really advise you not to use German for transcribing Russian variety names, because it is always different this way. "Sch" sounds other way than "Ж" in Russian or "Zh" in English. "Sch" = "Ш" (Rus) = "Sh" (Eng). I don't remember if "Ж" is existed in German unfortunately..." Please delete the variety "Pertsewidnij Schelmij" ~ It is already in the database under it's correct name "Pertsevidnyi Zheltyi". |
