This Salvia is one of the hardiest I've owned. It has remained in leaf this winter despite lows of -7°c. It is also a truly phenomenal bloomer.
If it has a downside it is that it is a bit of a thug and will grow into other plants to the point that it can smother other strong growing S.microphylla cultivars.
I have grown nine different varieties of salvia up to now. I have to say this is my favorite. Beautiful, healthy, blooms almost all year. Its best attribute in my opinion is its lovely shiny lush green foliage. Drought, oversaturated soil, amendments, no amendments, this plant looks great no matter what!
This is a spectacular Salvia for colder climates. Very hardy and also tolerant of wet winter conditions. The downside to this plant is that it does grow to be very large.
Easiest way to propogate is by layering stems and severing the following year for removal. It also produces seed freely.
This is a great Hummingbird attracting Salvia and I love it! I've grown it in containers and although it had reseeded before, I try and get another one the following spring. I'd get a plant of Forest Fire for my parents and they loved this Salvia. They'd tell me that they got lots of Hummers visiting the flowers and got so excited seeing the Hummers. A bright, easy, beautiful and long blooming Salvia.
My parents passed away several years ago and since they loved having Forest Fire bloom to attract the hummingbirds so much, I make sure to get this one every year in their honor.
Jame Sage (Salvia x jamensis 'Elk Crimson King') is a beautiful new introduction from Flowers By The Sea. They are located in Elk, CA. FBTS grows, sells and specializes in salvias.
This tall long blooming beauty is from Colombia. It's a water loving salvia, so keep that in mind if you decide to grow it. If grown in a container, it's going to need a larger container than a 3 gallon pot. I've thought about growing it, but with our hot and sometimes lengthy dry summers, I might have to give a lot of thought to it if I want to grow it. A plus for it is that it attracts hummingbirds.
Mealy Cup Sage farinacea Sallyfun™ Blue is one of my favorites to grow. I'm not always able to find Victoria's Blue to grow and I always find this one at my local Meijer store every year. Even though it isn't the same color as Victoria's Blue, it is close enough and I'm happy with it.
Each year I plant 3 plants in a large container tub and deadhead faithfully during the season, so it keeps the flowers producing, but even if I left some to go to seed, I don't think they would produce any seedlings the following year, because the plant isn't hardy here.
Big Mexican Scarlet Sage (Salvia gesneriiflora 'Tequila') is a large salvia and if it's planted in a container, it's going to need a larger container than a 3 gallon. Provide support at planting time because strong winds and rain, especially, heavy rainfall, will weigh down and break the stems.
Red Pineapple Sage (Salvia elegans 'Elk Sonoran Red') is a new Flowers By The Sea introduction for 2017. They are located in Elk, CA. FBTS grows, sells and specializes in salvias.
Salvia microphylla 'Little Kiss' looks like salvia 'Hot Lips' with the red and white flowers, except that it is a compact plant that is shorter and not as wide.
