Hydrangea macrophylla 'Glowing Embers' is also known as 'Alpen Glow' and 'Alpengluhen' ('Alpenglühen'). Regardless of the name used, it has large mophead type reddish pink to crimson flowers that can reach 8" in diameter. In acid soils the flowers are deep blue and darken into shades of indigo and purple. It is a compact shrub that grows 3-5 ft. tall. Mildew could be a problem. Based on the name, it is probably from Europe.

Alpengluhen means Glowing Embers and was developed approximately 50 years ago. Will bloom for 2-3 months beginning in mid-summer. Blooms will turn from crimson to an almost purple color as they age. Prefers moist, well-drained soil and performs well in coastal areas.
