Recently (1996) described solitary green agave from higher elevations in Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, and Querétaro. Tolerates more cold, water, and shade than many desert agaves. Prefers some overhead protection in hot desert climates. May be confused with A. shawii from sea level in Baja California, which is normally an offsetting plant with less open rosettes.
