Origin: Southern Chile, but also crosses the border into western Argentina at places.
Grows at very high altitudes of above 1500 m in extremely xeric regions of Patagonia mainly in volcanic ashfields in subalpine forests, thin grassland and stony plateau.

Needs protection form moisture during the winter. A window or plastic panel can be placed over it during winter rains. A combination of wet and cold will kill it.
Can also be placed in an unheated alpine house for the winter.
