One of my top 5. Gorgeous maroon/purple velvet flowers. Wonderful, strong, fruity fragrance. Japanese beetles really go for this plant (mainly blooms but some leaves). I pick them off several times a day. Surprisingly vigorous for zone 4b. David Austin has it at zone 5. Planted in about 5 hours of sun. Nearly constant repeat. Not a good cut flower for me. Wilts by the end of the day. Dried roses very fragrant though. Does well here in Minnesota. I cover it with 2 shovels of dirt and a foot of mulched leaves for the winter.
  • Posted by Yorkshirelass on Apr 30, 2017 12:09 PM concerning plant:
This rose may sometimes bloom with paler flowers during its second flush. Advice from David Austin Roses is that the colour can be variable when the petals are thin.
  • Posted by oakslesly (Ventura County, California) on Aug 14, 2018 5:52 PM concerning plant:
This rose has grown in mostly shade for several years in Ventura County, Southern California. The color has been a deep purple-red, with good fragrance. Our summers continue to be blisteringly hot, and Munstead Wood appears to appreciate the mostly shade location.
