    Toichi Itoh, a Japanese nurseryman, succeeded in crossing Paeonia x lemoinei, a hybrid
    tree peony, with P. lactiflora ‘Kakoden’, a white-flowered herbaceous peony.
    This was the beginning of the Itoh peonies.

    These intersectional hybrids are extremely vigorous and appear to have good resistance to peony blight (Botrytis paeoniae).
