This former member of Cochemiea (sensu stricto) is the most common and widespread member of that group from Baja California. It grows sprawling or sometimes briefly erect stems that branch at the base. They have marked tubercles and look beautiful in flower during the summer. 1 hooked central spine, ~8 radial spines. Flowers are red, tubular, bilaterally symmetrical, and pollinated by hummingbirds. Found in Baja California Sur. Hooked spines (hook points down) are easily removed with careless handling.
The genus Cochemiea as originally defined was all species like this from BC with tubular red (hummingbird) flowers. It was lumped with Mammillaria (a much larger group of hundreds of plants), then separated again, along with a bunch of other cacti from elsewhere in Mexico that don't make this type of flower, but do (for the most part) have hooked spines.
