This was originally registered with the name "Little Black Sambo" in 1966. However, over the past few decades complaints have been made about the racist nature of the name and with the 2009 International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP), a pathway to changing the names of plants was made available. This has since been renamed to "Helen Bannerman" (after the author of the 1898 book Little Black Sambo).

Naming is discussed in Julian Shaw's article Sense and Insensitivity – when a name offends, which is available on the RHS website and was published in The Orchid Review (Sept 2011).
