So I play around with hybridizing roses, and well most modern roses will bloom within a few weeks of germinating but not all roses do so. Rugosa's typically like to establish themselves into decent sized plant before they even think about blooming. I've waited more than two years for this bloom. I only got one but I'm hoping there will be more.
She's very fragrant. Grin

I like it. I like it a lot. If it is a tough as early rugosa's, you've got a winner.
It's a rose!!! It has nothing to do with life and death.

thank you Ken Smiling I think she will be hardy I've planted her in sand and can count on one hand how many times I've watered her. Just hoping she is floriferous. Not sure a cross took but
her mother is

It must be satisfying to grow your own roses from seed! Are there any special tricks or is it pretty easy? I have some old Rugosa roses that I'm thinking about saving seed from...

Gorgeous!!! I love the pinkness of the petals!! I found that too...my rugosa crosses took about 3 years to bloom. I gave them to a friend...and now I'll never see how they turned out (some hadn't bloomed yet)...she de-friended me. I'm so curious as to how they look now. Oh well.

Rebekah Hurray! Congrats. You must be thrilled! I was first tempted to guess Blanc Double de Coubert in her lineage. My BDC is very fragrant so I would hope that her child will continue being so.
My first seedling of a rugosa is already three years old. It has 7 canes and this summer showed its first buds on one but..alas Sighing! the buds were dropped off early so its still a mystery for me. The mother is Roseraie de L'Haÿe; pollen unknown. However what I do like about it are its autumn foliage colours so it will be a keeper for that purpose for sure. It also is a well formed shrub so it adds a nice structure in the back of the border. For blooms I will have to wait for next season... Sighing!
Thanks to your post I was tempted out into my garden to keep on collecting hips. I collected hips from a floribunda 'Cumbaya' that set plenty of tiny hips.
https://www.helpmefind.com/ros...
I've collected seeds of 'Fourth of July', Georgette,( a Interplant floribunda), Altissimo, and some OGRs : Ferdinand Pichard, Rosamundi, . From my tour I spotted quite a few more hips that may reach ( seed) ripeness . This year I'll only know which are the seed plants. The pollen was cared by bees... Whistling At least I'll have hopefully seedlings to see "What if?"... Crossing Fingers! and get an idea of the ammount of work and space my hobby breeding requires.
I spotted two different rugosas that might have ripe seeds. : 'Hansaland' and 'Maria Rosario'. The latter is a cultivar developed by Mrs Vidal in her nursery near Buenos Aires: soft pink very fragrant...that would Canadian Carol swoon. So I'm expectant to get like you something from her children .

Yes JHeirloomseeds it is very exciting thought for some varieties the wait can be long. There are a few hoops to jump through for rose seed the biggest is they need to go through a cold period. I stratify mine by keeping them in the fridge for about three months. My problem this season my refrigerator froze many of the seeds. So this year there were very few who germinated.

Thank you Carol I like the faint pink too! She is a bit of an elegant country girl. I don't think she is necessarily an improvement on her mother but I'm in love and I'm so glad she's doing well. It's kinda fun I grew her mother from a cutting. I'm sorry you didn't get to see all your rose babies bloom. I gave away two of this roses siblings. One because I only have so much room and two because my friend was a work buddy who was getting back into roses. I don't work there anymore but I stop by. I hope she'll tell me what they look like. One of the other siblings looked better but I gave it away because it was already potted up.

Hampartsum thank you and glad I could create some rose temptation lol!
All the hip hunting sounds exciting! You know I have an old thread that has lots of images of selfs. There really is so much variation even if we just plant the seeds the bees pollinate. I think the thread is called, just some seedlings. If you want to see some pictures. Maria Rosario sounds lovely I'll have to look her up. Actually it sounds like you have a lot of great roses to work with I look forward to seedling pics Hurray!

@Rebekah do you stratify your seeds right away in the fridge ?. I have used the damp paper towel method that works fine if one keeps it free of moulding if left three months long. (Worst comes the worst one can always replace the paper towel). I'll retrieve your older thread and post there for my general trials and keep this one specifically for rugosas. Thank you so much! Thank You! Thank You! I tip my hat to you.

I do stratify right away. I've used paper towels but they always seem to mold. Lately because I do this small scale I just put in some moist perlite. I have a friend who just puts rose seeds in a baggy with a few spritzes of water mixed with captain to prevent mold.
