Sorry if this isn't quite the best place for this.... but....

Does anyone have any trail-cameras?

I had what would have been my first and only fully vine-ripened and blemish free butternut squash stolen overnight tonight... I know it was a person and not an animal based on where they were... but that aside... does anyone know of any good and affordable trail cameras? My wife was thinking about calling the cops, but without any video/photo proof, I can't see any point in contacting them over ~7 pounds of missing butternut squash.

Thanks in advance

I don't know, but I'm thinking about getting one. I also am interested in any experience with trail cameras that y'all could share here.

I'm all ears! I'm all ears! I'm interested too.

I don't know but we've kicked the idea around, mainly for four legged creatures lurking around at night.

That's a shame that someone would take your squash from your garden! I hope they were hungry and needed food.

Honestly, if they just asked, I would have given it to them... but there's no excuse for just taking it...

We don't have a trail camera but we do have a RING doorbell that has a camera. It costs $3 a month per camera (we have more than 1) and that automatically sends it directly to the internet to save it in your account.
You can access it from anywhere using your phone. Out in town, on vacation, or even at home in bed at night. 😉
I see all my postal deliveries, visitors, squirrels, etc.

I've been thinking about getting one myself. We live in a rural area so I want to catch these inbred rednecks who are dumping animals. Scratch the inbred. I promised my husband I would stop saying that word😬😂. Anyway, I have a neighbor that has a house behind me. His driveway is an access road through my property. He stopped staying home after his kids left & his wife went to a nursing home because she has some disease & needs round the clock care. Every so often he would go home but it was never regular. He & I do not speak to each other but he mentioned to the neighbor across the road from us that he had been robbed! Twice! They got guns, antiques, anything of value. His road was in bad shape & you couldn't tell there was even a house there unless you drove down it & around where it curved. This is the back part of my property where my vegetable garden is. There is a little rideaway that comes up in front of my garden & borders the high line. ('m sorry, I know this is confusing). Someone has a lease around there because I've seen the deer stands. And one time someone put their stand in the way of the electric company & they asked us about it. Sometimes people ride 4 wheelers up that high line track. So someone could have accessed his house going that way. He wouldn't report it because apparently his house is a pig sty (this according to the daughter) so we don't even know a time frame. It makes me a little nervous so I plan to get a gun. I've been wanting one anyway but now this world is getting crazy.

Get one...

That being said, I don't think me shooting someone over some stolen butternut would be seen in any positive light...

True!!! I'm in some Facebook groups & people are having potted plants stolen off their porch. I don't have this problem I guess because I have dogs & my house sits back from the road. My neighbor across the road has a pond close to the road but its in front of her house & to get to it you have to pull into her driveway. She's elderly & ended up calling the cops because people were driving up to the pond & fishing. Not asking permission, leaving trash, etc.

I guess I just don't understand some people. They are so inconsiderate. You put in alot of time & money getting that squash to where you could pick it. My neighbor paid alot of money stocking her pond. People just don't ask anymore. They just take.

I am interested in a trail camera, zero interest in a surveillance camera. Would be happy to hear of suggestions. I don't hunt, so all I need is something to snap photos of the critters in my back forest.

I have been recommended the Browning cameras, though their names are very silly tactical, like "strike force", they take nice images.

I have Nest cameras for spying on my wildlife, since I can't often get out there to retrieve footage and Nest is accessible with my phone or computer.

I recently bought a Wildgame Scrapeline trail cam. So far, so good. My boys helped me mount it and it worked really well taking short videos of us as we milled around. Nice clear color videos. It can also be set for still photos, not sure exactly how. And it is kind of funny - it's all camo'd up (like the animals care...). It was on sale at Dick's for $50, regularly $80, and came with batteries and Sim card so all ready to mount and go. I may get another one to mount around my chicken yard. I do have to switch out the Sim card, so am searching my office for an extra one (I know I have several of them, but locating them is another story).
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

I keep thinking I want to get a camera for the vegetable garden area since its surrounded by woods & is quite a ways from the house. The garden hadn't been used in several years as we had done container plantings for what little we had to grow. The last couple years I've been working on it & this year got a battery powered pole saw. There are several trees growing & as I was assessing them, realized that I had a couple pine trees that are too big for me to cut down, a couple sweet gum that are definitely not staying, & a couple persimmon trees. I do not care for persimmon but the hubs likes them. I collected 4 - yes 4 - one day & put them in the freezer. I noticed several on the trees not quite ripe. I also noticed a couple limbs low enough that I had to raise them up to walk under, & thought to myself I need to prop them up somehow. I went out there a couple days ago & *something* had eaten them all. There are none in the trees that I can see or any on the ground. Since its in the middle of the vegetable garden, they will now be cut down. There is no point in having dessert for the deer & raccoons. I had mentioned to my husband not to eat the ones in the freezer because I wanted to make something like jelly once I had enough. Not being too smart, he sarcastically wanted to know if I was going to make a pie out of the four. I said yep, for some fairies, so don't touch them.

He's also showed me strange things caught on those cameras like a child in the middle of the woods at night & people saying its a ghost. And weird looking creatures. So maybe I don't really want to know what's out there.

Kathy,
My mom uses persimmons as the sweetener in sugar-free cookies.

Deb,
I like that Wildgame Scrapeline trail cam price better than the Nest camera price.

Nest cams are definitely more expensive and the quality is not as high; the only reason to get them instead of a trail cam is if you can't/won't fetch the SD card from the trail cam (or you really want a surveillance cam for that area that you can look at anytime from anywhere). I don't actually really highly recommend the Nest cams for wildlife videography as the quality isn't super great. I just happen to need the ability to access them remotely and I use them to watch my front and back doors as well.

And also to get alerted when there's a cat trying to prey on the birds at my pond so I can turn on my sprinklers bwahaha.

We have various fruit trees close to the house but don't need a night cam to know what's snatching all the fruit; they are all being taken in broad daylight by the squirrels!! Including apples, figs, peaches, and plums! Glare

WalMart has inexpensive trail cameras... and you can always take it back if the quality doesn't suit you....

Got mine there so I could see what was eating all my cat's food at night Smiling
