I picked up a Wildgame Scrapeline trail cam at Dick's for $50 (on sale from $70). I'm having some trouble figuring it all out, but hoping it will let me know what is cruising around my back forest.

I've been thinking about a game camera as well.

I see that they have rings/clusters of IR bulbs for night photography. Do they emit any sort of visible light which would make them noticeable to two-legged prowlers?

I imagine that they're camouflaged so that the two-legged critters don't run off with them.

I believe there is no visible light, but I plan on placing it high enough up, the only way it would be removed would be with a ladder. I just need to find one that I can either monitor remotely or will have the capacity to record for a longer period of time so I don't need to wipe the card every few days or be set to just overwrite itself automatically so I can only check it when I'm noticing someone walking through taking stuff so I can then give it to the police.

I am having nothing but troubles with my trail cam. I apparently don't know how to work it, and the instructions are minimal to say the least. So far, the only thing I've recorded is myself going up to change out the SIM card. No animals. I have it set fairly low on a tree, and am not at all worried about humans. The only folks who go out back are my neighbors and us. The neighbors have kids and various riding devices - a 4-wheeler, maybe a dirt bike, bicycles. I'll keep trying to figure out my cam and maybe eventually catch a coyote or deer, I know they are both plentiful in my forest.

I bought a trail camera last year. I think it was around $60, not exactly sure. I'm not crazy about it. We live on a river and have a large spring-fed pond. There was a track of something that moved between the pond and the river and I was concerned that it might be a water moccasin or pigmy rattler, both are native here. The camera is a "Muddy Pro-Cam 14" with a 1.5 second trigger speed and a 50 ft. detection range. Because I was concerned about a snake I mounted it fairly low on a tree.
Well, the pictures are highly pixilated so along with the area being under a tree and having dappled light during the day you can't make out what kind of snake it is just 6 feet away. It could be a king snake for all you can see. The other thing is that we probably have either a river otter or mink, but the animal is so fast that I only have gotten a picture of a part of its tail. The same with the dog or coyote that went by. I'm just not buying the ""1.5 second trigger". I do have lots of pictures of parts of deer and occasionally get a picture of a whole animal. While the "dog/coyote" and deer were about 12 feet away I can move the camera back further from the area the seem to use as a trail, to get more whole animal pictures, but that won't fix the pixilation problem with the day shots. lOl, feel sorry for you, who could steel the camera on your territory. That is very sad that your ca didn't take some pictures of the guy who stole it and didn't send it o your computer, that would be very funny to find the robber this way. Anyway if you are searching for the cam, as you already understand there is no much sense to buy a very expensive cam because anything can happen o it, but the difference between cheap ones and more expensive is not that big. In my opinion, Browning Strike Force Trail Camera is the best trail & game camera https://under-reviews.com/top-... for its money, so pay attention to it.
