I made an architectural change to the database this morning, to add Series as a part of a plant's name.

Also, I re-worked the "Add a plant" form.

Now, when you add (or edit) a plant, you can enter the trade name and the series name. Taken together, these two names are then combined by the system to give a display name. Also, you can then later search by series name.

As a test, I added 5 plants in the Flutterby Grande series:

http://garden.org/plants/searc...

Click on each one to see the fields.

I have a feeling that this might go a long way to fixing the strange trade names out there, especially in the case of these groups of plants. Check it out and see what you think.

Addendum: We used to have "Series" under the databox architecture. I have disabled that and for each plant that had a value there, I moved the value into its new Series name field.

This is great Dave. Is it possible to run a report of series names for review. I seem to recall finding some series names with the word series in the name.

Good idea, Evan. I have made a report of all series entries in the DB, sorted by series name:

It looks like I will have to re-name the Calibrachoas and some Petunias
Please clarify

example:
The Calibrachoas database: Million Bells (Calibrachoa 'Aloha Blue Sky')
Cultivar names:
(1) Aloha Blue Sky
(0) Duealbusky
Trade name information:
Series: RED FOX Aloha
Common names:
(0) Mini Petunia
(0) Million Bells
(0) Mini-Petunia
(0) Callies
Botanical names:
Calibrachoa Accepted
Million Bells (Calibrachoa)
----
Would the cultivar simply be "calibrachoa"?
Where would the patent variety name be? "Duealbusky" under cultivar?? or Trade Name?
Botanical Name: Should be "Calibrachoa x hybrida" ?
Trade Name should be " Blue Sky"
Series Name should be "Red Fox Aloha"?

Thanks

Lightspeed.
Some names may be confusing with series and trade names being partly the same, see the patented Acapulco series Agastache. Display name Agastache mexicana Agastache Acapulco® Acapulco® Salmon & Pink). We could eliminate Acapulco® from trade name though.

In this case, the fields are as follows:

Botanical name: Calibrachoa x hybrida
Cultivar: Duealbusky
Trade name: Blue Sky
Series name: Aloha

At least, that's what I gather from this page:

I agree If you extrapolate from some of these RHS DB entries you get this result as well. http://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticu...

So what do I do with the ones that are patent pending and only have a trade name? Is it ok to enter it without a cultivar name?

IMO delete the word "Series". Not a problem with yours though Lynn because they don't have trade names and so aren't in the display name.

Thank you Evan. I really appreciate your ability to see things the way you do. Thumbs up
I think it's best if the database is uniform, so I will go delete the word series from the ones that have it.

Just to confirm one more thing:

When entering a new plant, Species is what appears in the datasheet as Botanical Name, right? So for the calibrachoa example above:

The Calibrachoas database: Million Bells (Calibrachoa 'Aloha Blue Sky')
Botanical name: Calibrachoa x hybrida (Data Field is called "Species" on the initial New Plant entry)
Cultivar: Duealbusky
Trade name: Blue Sky
Series name: Aloha

Another Question: Will the system allow duplicate Trade Names for different entries. Almost every calibrachoa series out there has one that is named "Blue". So we could have 20 different "Blue Trade Name Calibrachoa
What happens if there are multiple "Blue", different series, many without registered patented names.

Sorry for all the questions. Just want to redo my work once and not have to redo several times over

Joanne,
Adding a new plant entry only:
Genus: Calibrachoa
Species: x hybrida

Editing existing plant:
Botanical name: Calibrachoa x hybrida.

"Another Question: Will the system allow duplicate Trade Names for different entries. Almost every calibrachoa series out there has one that is named "Blue". So we could have 20 different "Blue Trade Name Calibrachoa

Ouch! Include the series name in the trade name when warranted. This means a hard and fast rule is replaced by the subjective decision of the moderator.

Am I bad. We don't have anything set up for sedum searches by characteristics?

Lynn, now you'd search series in a general search, i.e. American Indians or Semper American Indians.

"We don't have anything set up for sedum searches by characteristics? "
??? http://garden.org/plants/group...

Edit: I gotcha. You'd like the semp specific only characteristics to show?

That was how we did it before. It gave all the semps in a particular series. It was wonderful.

Evan that link is for sempervivum, not Sedum.

Here's a good example, since it is in two different series. I changed the Trade Name to "Deep Blue"
Plant ID 229626
Million Bells (x hybrida Cabaret™ Deep Blue)
Cultivar names:
Balcabdebu
Trade name information:
Series: Cabaret™
Name: Deep Blue
Common names:
(0) Million Bells
(0) Mini-Petunia
(0) Callies
Botanical names:
x hybrida Accepted
Also sold as:
Isabells Deep Blue

Now, will I be able to enter different cultivar name and/or series with a Trade Name of Deep Blue? I will check

Yes it will allow another Trade Name "Deep Blue"
But, this one did not have a patented cultivar name, so see what happened: the file is now "x hybrida" and nothing else. Also, if I search in Calibrachoa, using Deep Blue for search criteria, no results

Plant ID 542252
Million Bells (x hybrida)
Trade name information:
Series: Colorburst
Name: Deep Blue
Common names:
(0) Million Bells
(0) Mini-Petunia
(0) Callies
Botanical names:
x hybrida Accepted

Please advise
