I'm cleaning out a woodsy area beside our home (getting rid of buckthorns and will be planting more beneficial bushes and trees).
I have 2 kinds of trees/shrubs (?) that survived the buckthorn takeover and I'm wondering if they are worthwhile to keep.

#1 is just putting out leaves at the ends of its branches right now and is very smooth, light gray, and bendy.

#2 has "blushy" leaves after they emerge that turn green, and a dark bark (ignore the big tree in the background).

Does anyone recognize these?

First one is probably an Ash, but fingers block view of stem and buds.

It looks like opposite arrangement, and it looks like pinnate compound leaves emerging. Use your hand to get the close focus, then move your hand before taking the picture.

#2 The leaves look very similar to a cherry!

#1 Ash would make sense. We have two 30 year old ash trees nearby. A couple weeks ago we took one down because of ash borer. The other will be coming down soon for the same issue. Very sad.

Thank you!
