I live in Ga. Z 7B. I have 600 dayliliy varieties but I purchased some last year that were registered in the past few years. Several varieties of them have not even opened half way the last few days. I have never seen this before. Please advise as to the cause.

It's usually weather or insect related in my garden. If they are all "new" they may not yet be fully adapted to your growing conditions.

Are you able to post a picture? We can give you a better idea if we can see what it looks like since there are various possible causes.

If the variety is very frilly on the edges sometimes the flower gets caught in its own frills and does not open fully. I have this problem with 'Culmination'.

Thank you for your replies. I have never learned to post pictures. These have had wide open blooms the past two weeks. They are ruffled but not hanging. Now they are just past the beginning stage of opening, the bud just cracked and the next day they are soft and limp like they had been open the day before. There are six different varieties, all tets. None of my others, tets or dips are doing this and I have never seen it happen in the past. If it has it wasn't for more than a day.

Can be cold nights or just the nature of the cultivar. Some by nature open later--or, inherent in genes, never a good opener.

Update to my earlier inquiry about daylilies failing to open. I have the aforementioned daylilies in 4 gal. pots. I have a mixed variety flower bed beside the pots which includes approx. 20 older daylily varieties. I have 20 varieties in the pots. Now all these daylilies are affected. I have other very large beds without the same condition. I remembered that I fertilized these affected ones two weeks prior with alpaca poop which is a cold manure supposedly able to use without composting first. They are healthy looking otherwise. None of my other beds were fertilized with the poop.

Is it only buds that are ready to open that are doing this, or are any smaller not ready to open yet buds having any issues?

I'm having that problem with some of mine. The buds are not opening fully. I know we have had a good amount of rain so that could be the problem but I also have many plants that are doing great. I am thinking it could just be this one plant. I'm not sure what it is but it is very tall and the buds are orange. It might even be the wild one.

Now the younger buds are beginning to show premature aging.

For bud problems one important thing to eliminate is the daylily gall midge. Look for maggots inside the affected buds that look like this:

If it's not that, three other possible pest culprits are:

If they're ruled out then it could be environmental but I would start the process of elimination with the pests.
