After almost five months of sheltering in place, I'm glad I'm old. If I were young and still had a life, Green Grin! I'd be feeling highly deprived these days. The garden is my sole focus in the daytime. At night I read or I watch reruns of old favorite TV shows. It's boring and predictable but safe. The garden is quiet this year, with only an occasional human visitor, but lots of wildlife: opossums, raccoons, skunks, squirrels, and my cats. I have more birds, lizards, frogs, and snakes than ever before, and I have many more bees and fewer wasps. There are virtually no mosquitoes, snails, and spiders this year. Some of these changes might have negative ecological causes and consequences (especially the absence of garden spiders), but they're all positive changes for me personally.

Many years ago I became jaded in my appreciation of roses with solid-colored blooms and stopped buying them. I now want only bicolor and multicolored blooms. One of the prettiest in my garden is Hot Romance, the thumbnail for this month. The blooms start out orange with pink edges. About halfway through the life of the bloom, the orange portion becomes an orange and yellow blend, and that blend gradually becomes a pale yellow. The edges stay pink throughout. Here are some photos showing the color progression.

Beautiful!!!

Happy August! Only another 2.5 months of relentless heat here where I live. YES! Everything here is just fried. No blooms to speak of. Plants are just trying to survive. We are officially into spider mite season. Been washing off the undersides of my leaves to try to get rid of them. Staying proactive.

Passed my Consulting Rosarian test yesterday. So glad my test anxiety with it is finally over! It was much more detailed than I thought it would be. Especially with micronutrients and chemicals. Questions about Boron being tied up in the soil and which of four different chemicals is the more poisonous should you choose to drink it. I hope I never get asked that question as a consulting rosarian. My advice would be to call suicide prevention, 911 and if they already took the stuff, 911 and poison control. Unfortunately, none of those "correct" responses were on the test.

Still trying to get my Mom settled after my Dad's passing. Not easy to do under quarantine. Lots of hoops to still jump through which will take several more months, unfortunately.

The Health Dept here still can't figure out what to do with us COVID trackers, although they keep screaming for more daily in the local newspaper. There are 200 of us, that to my knowledge, they are not using. So, I am going to be teaching myself how to make videos. Now that I am done with studying for the consulting rosarian test (is anyone ever done with that?), I am taking the courses offered though UC Davis on how to do this. Looking for better videos of my yard, info videos from the master gardeners here, etc. Need to get a gimbal. Anyone know what gimbal works best with a Google phone? Not all the software works best with each type of phone.

So, sorry to have been so absent lately (although you might have considered that a blessing!). Hope to be more visible in the future. Speaking of visible, anyone heard from Beth lately?

A lovely and entertaining rose, Zuzu - all it needs is a resident frog.

Zuzu, I'm not glad I'm old (I ache too much) but I am glad I'm retired and don't have anywhere to go or anywhere I HAVE to be most days. Groceries and a couple of Dr. appts. are my big dates these days, lol!

I have Hot Romance too and just love it! It isn't a fast repeater but the blooms are always worth the wait. I've found its growth habit is more sideways than up. It's only about 2 feet tall but a good 4 feet wide. Maybe because I'm in a cooler zone but mine has deeper colors than yours.

Thank you all for the congrats. It is appreciated.

I have a couple of good reads about roses that I just got. ARS did a presentation a couple of weeks ago about a trip one of the members took to England to see "Gertrude Jekyll"s Lost Garden." It was a great presentation and wonderful to hear and see one of the truly restored (back to the original) gardens that Gertrude designed. Just beautiful and a great story. The couple who bought an estate in England didn't know anything about gardening and also didn't know that Gertrude had designed it. So, they have patiently restored it back. My book is used but signed by the author (I love signed books) and has a note to the original owner from the author. There is also a picture inside of a group of people visiting the garden. Unfortunately, no idea who these people are. I am looking forward to reading it.

I got another great book on roses, titled The Rose Doctor by Gary Richie. Great pictures! I now know for sure that Yolande d' A has Anthrancnose, grasshopper and caterpillar damage. Poor thing! At least the hoplia beetles leave her alone.

Zuzu, your Hot Romance is gorgeous! I love bicolors and stripeys! The colors on Hot Romance are just beautiful.

Seil, I am always in awe at your beautiful roses. Really pretty!

Hi MbN, you can tree mail me if you like regarding videos, I started learning through the local art school 3 years ago and have completed a short documentary about a local grower and have a Youtube for my floral business.

I have tried most gimbals and the Zhiyun mobile phone is affordable and easy-ish to use. All gimbals require some balancing which can be annoying.

If this gets the idea wheel turning, there's definitely a knowledge gap on Youtube that a rosarian could fill. A lot of the info is dated or less than expert if you know what I mean. General care, diagnosis of issues, how to choose varieties etc.

Congratulations Mustbnuts! You have so much going on in your life at a time when others are just sitting around bored. I can't imagine putting myself through the stress of passing exams anymore but you make it sound like nothing. I have no rose photos to reward you for your hard work, so have a lamb instead. His name is Toby.

I cut the only fresh blooms on my bushes before the rain came. I think the white one may be Jacqueline du Pres.

I only own one rose plant Zuzu, so I can't really join in on the convo, but I couldn't help but compliment on the very beautiful 'Hot Romance' blooms! Those are some of the prettiest roses I've seen, by far nodding

It is an unidentified mini-rose plant. Here is a photo:

I warn you, it's a slippery slope! I started off with 6 unidentified roses, added 11 this year and have 13 ordered for next year already! Now I'm on the look out for fall planting. Rose addiction 😜

I can't wait for that to happen! Big Grin I know for sure that your spirit will soar with all the possibilities ample space provides.... nodding Then of course in my heavenly imagination it would contain many, many roses...so I' wouldn't be at least concerned about getting fully in love with roses. Yes, its a one way journey....yes some thorns at times...but the rewards ...yes they are never ending...
There are plenty of examples here at this forum of great collectors enjoying their roses...forever.

I really cannot believe @zuzu that you are old. Now I know that I am. I am retired and wish
that I could grow more roses! When we lived at our old house I had over 50 varieties of roses in
my gardens. But after the flooding (3 times in 27 months) I could not talk my better half into
moving back to the house; so we now live in a rental house and I have currenty 2 roses in
1/2 Whiskey Barrels. Well as you can see my Rouletii has bloomed again and here are some
pictures.
