mcvansoest said:What is ugly about it? It looks perfectly fine to me...the nature of the plant is to grow mutated and weird. It's not bad it's why people buy them. I have a nice sized one myself. Maybe that's why some people think it looks beat up. In time they do get huge. Beyond our lifetime for your plant. Don't worry, It looks good

Ive never been under the impression that they are pretty. The spines are a necessity, and their shapes are interesting....but sadly, their purpose is not to appeal to the eyes, but to do their function(store water, make shade and fend off predators). A lot of them can be summed up as a "spiny mess".

Flowers are what you call lovingly, but when does a cactus flower all the time?

As for this particular specimen....well, for one, its under watered during growth season/spurt(unless you advocate plant anorexia) and 2....its growth tip is pointing sideways. Sadly thats a deformity that leads to a certain ....condition the plant could develop that youre all too familiar with.
Given the OP's zone, its probably difficult to provide good conditions, and would result in inevitable loss of health on the plants part.

Stefan describes any cactus he has failed to grow by any number of 'lovingly' names: ugly, boring, common, a waste of time, ...
Now you have described every cactus in the world.
A few with plastic or straw flowers growing on their heads have been in bloom for years.
Now you're just being mean. That sideways bump is why I suggested it is Cereus Peruvianus Monstrose. Its just a seedling and it looks fine, really!
