Hello everyone, help a guy out? I've used all my resources to try and locate just *what* this little guy is and I can't figure it out! I'm doing a FULL soil change for all my plants and want to put everyone in what will serve them best and need to know what this guy is to do just that. I got him from my local Lowe's here in Utah. Thank you for ANY and ALL help!!

Its a seedling so an ID might be difficult but it reminds me of Cereus Peruvianus Monstrose. It doesn't need a new pot, maybe in a year or so.

Thank you for your reply! I'll put that down as what this guy might be, I really appreciate it! I'll be keeping it in this pot, just changing out the soil!

Stenocereus pruinosus. Sadly its been battered....and ugly.

What is ugly about it? It looks perfectly fine to me...

the nature of the plant is to grow mutated and weird. It's not bad it's why people buy them. I have a nice sized one myself. Maybe that's why some people think it looks beat up. In time they do get huge. Beyond our lifetime for your plant. Don't worry, It looks good

Ha ha it's actually hard to believe that somebody called a cactus "ugly" in this forum. I assume it was meant lovingly???

Ive never been under the impression that they are pretty. The spines are a necessity, and their shapes are interesting....but sadly, their purpose is not to appeal to the eyes, but to do their function(store water, make shade and fend off predators). A lot of them can be summed up as a "spiny mess". Flowers are what you call lovingly, but when does a cactus flower all the time?
As for this particular specimen....well, for one, its under watered during growth season/spurt(unless you advocate plant anorexia) and 2....its growth tip is pointing sideways. Sadly thats a deformity that leads to a certain ....condition the plant could develop that youre all too familiar with.
Given the OP's zone, its probably difficult to provide good conditions, and would result in inevitable loss of health on the plants part.

Stefan describes any cactus he has failed to grow by any number of 'lovingly' names: ugly, boring, common, a waste of time, ...

A few with plastic or straw flowers growing on their heads have been in bloom for years.

Cutting of stenocereus. What I deem failed to grow is usually something has a tendency to croak and etiolated. I consider plants that ive grown successfully, but have failed to provide feasible results, mainly
-neoraimondia
-most opuntias
-Echinocactus grusonii
-kalanchoe "bryophyllums"
-pilosocerei
As for failed, ive probably failed more than a few plants of nearly every genus in cultivation.
From agave to tephrocactus. I did get better at it though. But that doesnt make some plants any less boring.
And regarding the ones with nice appearance , they do exist. Exceptions however. Not the norm. Like how gymnocalycium mihanovicih/ friedrichii sticks out among its kin. Or the rebutia canigueralii and heliosa stick out among their very spiny cousins. Or the not-even-present in wholesale geohntionia....

Finally, its not a cereus, its an under watered poorly cared for stenocereus pruinosus(given the particular spine-per-areole arrangement on those not....beaten down) whose tip is growing sideways , likely due to a lack of light... i cant to anything to change that, other than to warn to prevent it to happen again.

Was at a supermarket yesterday. I saw a plastic/rubber fake flower glued to a catus. They didn't even pretend to make it look real. That thing they glued on that poor catus should have been sold in the kitchen department as a pan scrubber. Now that made the catus ugly

There is nothing mutated looking about that plant at all yet. It is a seedling developing ribs. I would hesitate at this point to conclude it is a cereus monstrose. I am more inclined to agree with Stefan that it is a Stenocereus. Time and a few more inches will tell.

I am poor in identifying some succulents, but your plant is a nice looking cutie. Just make that media grittier than that though, try to add much more perlite or pumice, protect the base of that plant.
