New to Dahlias but not to gardening. This was my first attempt to grow these beauties . Three failed to thrive and the remaining three...
The one (in pic) is on the second round of blossoms but not alot, one had a couple blossoms in August and has some buds now and the third hasn't bloomed yet and has small buds which probably won't have enough time to mature and bloom before we get a hard frost. They're all the dinner plate large varieties. We did have a very hot summer but I watered them regularly. Our sub soil is sandy so they weren't in too soggy of soil. I fertilized them every couple of weeks with a Miracle Grow type of fertilizer.
What am I doing wrong and any helpful Dahlia growing tips appreciated.

Hi Vicky-

It really doesn't sound like you did anything wrong with your dahlias. The bigger dahlias usually take 90-120 days to bloom, and the smaller ones usually start popping open around 60 days. They hate the heat, and that may have also played a big part in it. This was not my "best year ever", for sure, so don't beat yourself up!

The one thing I can suggest (if you're concerned and want to try again), is a soil test.

Hi Vicky ~ welcome to Dahlia Growing! They're one of the best flowers to grow. This year I had a variety that literally put off 100 blooms and I couldn't keep up with the cuttings! My lucky neighbors and co-workers had the same magenta dahlias on their desks Rolling on the floor laughing

One question - did you pinch them back when they were 4-5 leaf sets high? My worst year of growing dahlias, I didn't do this, and had weak blooms and practically NO blooms! Just checking :)

Enjoy these beauties!
