Logee's has a new idea... On-line bidding for a few of their plants. You really have to see these plants. Absolutely Gorgeous! But better yet are the current bids. Crazy!

O.M.G!!! Are these people crazy or stupid!?! There's no way those plants are that hard to find at more reasonable prices. Way too much time and money and too few brain cells.

Just insane...Somehow I expect the 'winners' will be mostly newbies... the longer I am into gardening, the cheaper I get because there are so many plants out there.

Because Logees or anyone else selling these plants declares them to be "rare' does not mean they actually are. Only a true collector or botanist would know for sure. Caveat emptor!

I've always found Logees prices to be way too expensive for the tiny plants you receive. I no longer go to their website.

If you read the description, the Variegated Philodendrons are in 5 inch pots and the Hoya caudata is in a 2 inch pot.

I almost feel sorry for the fools that are falling for this. Shame on Logees for ripping people off now of all times. I will never purchase from them, their reputation will be ruined when word gets out about this auction IMHO

Hmmmm these prices for the aroids anyway are the going rate for what people have been paying for over a year. Especially for the Florida Beauty and the variegated Monstera. The Philo Birkin...and the Scindapsus Silvery Anne, not so much...they are selling Birkin at Public for $18 and I got Silvery Anne last season at a local nursery for $4.99.

But the collector aroids are in line with the 'going rate'. Others that routinely sell for $500+ are Anthurium Ace of Spades, Anthurium dressleri, Anthurium besseae, hybrids like VooDoo Child and Red Crystallinum...
And a true Anthurium luxurians can go for $1000

I have this plant....its a sport mutation of a hybrid anthurium I have owned since the early 2000's. The original cross is A. besseae x A. magnificum. The sport occurred spontaneously a couple years ago, and has since replicated itself in an offset First photo: normal mother plant


This is one of the sport mutations. Its somewhat similar to a plant called the 'Fairchild Crystallinum' which is a high silver content Crystalline. Except my plant is not a crystallinum.


I could sell either small offsets of either one of these plants alone for over $500. But I don;t sell them, I like to grow them too much.

Its a very dark Crystallinum, a hybrid with something like dressleri, that produces blood red new leaves like this


I have been offered $750 for this plant. But its mine, Its NFS.

Someone made a hybrid between the Fairchild crystallinum x Red Crystallinum and one just went for $728 on an auction site.

My 2 cents- Having heard from Gina about these prices already, elsewhere, I don't blame Logee's for seeing what they can get. Buying their plants is an option; they are selling to a market, same as Chevy and BMW can both sell cars, just to different buyers..
I more fault the unscrupulous online seed sellers who 'seem' to be selling mislabeled or just plain 'fake' seeds, judging by the complaints I've seen. Example, google Rainbow colored rose seed... one Amazon listing seems to show 7.99 for a pack of those. They may make their bucks in smaller pieces but I bet they are making decent bucks.

There are a lot of fake things nowadays. one of the worst is people selling variegated Monstera deliciosa seeds. Variegated Monstera deliciosa rarely comes through the seeds. One seed in some huge number may produce a variegated plant. The only sure way to get one is to but a cutting. But you would be surprised how many people buy these seeds without doing any research.

The thing now is that with so may people importing plants...the average Joe can import up to 12 plants from overseas without a special import license... and so many new inexperienced people wanting to jump in to the aroid hobby, people are misadvertizing plants and selling hybrids as species.

It is believed that almost ALL the the plants being sold now as Anthurium crystallinum are bench crosses of some kind. I have a 'pure' one, but I got mine back in like 2001-2002. Before all this crazy aroid crap started happening.

Many people cannot tell the anthuriums in the Cardiolonchium section (the 'velvet leaves' ones) apart in photos. Sometimes its hard for even really expert people (of which I am not claiming to be one) you need to see all sorts of defining characteristics like the shape of the petiole, how the petiole attaches, how the veining system arises and disseminates and on and on. In short you almost need to be a botanist.

So a lot of people are getting taken.

A case in point is an anthurium called 'Mehani'. Mehani was hybridized by a man in India in the early to mid-2000's and, along with a 'sister' plant called Nikki, was imported into the US by a broker and placed into tissue culture at Agristarts in Apopka. It was produced from roughly 2006/7 until 2011 and then production was discontinued. Nikki, the sister plant, was only produced I think until 2009. People like myself who bought a Mehani back in the mid-2000's in the first wave of production have the real deal. I have talked to the Indian gentleman who created this hybrid and he told me the parentage of both Mehani and Nikki.

Recently there has been a resurgence of sales of a plant that is being called Mehani, but it bears little resemblance to the actually original plant other than both being velvet leaved. It is commanding big money, and people who pay mucho and later learn that they do not really have the original Mehani are pretty angry. One of the entities selling this plant is a very well known Florida based aroid seller. They call their plant 'Crystal Mehani'.

I have a bunch of the real deal Mehani, I have made many divisions over the years, and right now, I have one that is making seeds and I am going to see what the progeny looks like.

There was an article in yesterday's news titled something like "plants no one should buy." I can't find it today (of course). The list was interesting because my first thought was if everyone stopped buying these plants, NGA would be out of business.

The list included succulents, Fiddle-Leaf Figs, Maidenhair Ferns, Boston Ferns and EXPENSIVE PLANTS. (Sorry, can't remember the rest).

I personally think everyone should stop buying these aroids fro people who are importing them for pennies and reselling them for hundreds. It has artificially inflated the market. We thought that it would stop when the the postal service started having problems but it did not. Then we thought it would stop when COVID took people's jobs but it didn't. That only seemed to SPUR IT ON. I have seen people spend $1500 for THREE PLANTS. CRAZY

I just found this thread. I wouldn't have a Boston fern if you GAVE it to me AND came to my house to take care of it! Nor would I have a fiddle leaf fig! It seems that Krogers gets a shipment of these figs every week; I've had a lot of inquires from folks I know about what to do with this plant and why they died on them. My answer?You shouldn't have bought it in the first place!
Of course, some folks can grow them with no issues. Judging from all the questions about pothos ( sorry, I don't remember the real name), one would think they are impossible to grow. Yet mine is doing great. I just ignore it most of the time.

I think a real "problem" with new indoor gardeners , especially now that they're home most of the time, is a tendency to "helicopter garden". Their tendency is to "work" on their plants every day (sometimes more) and worry about every little spot and funny bump or pattern. I think more experienced gardeners need to encourage them to relax and enjoy their plants more and remind them that most plants don't respond as fast as they think they do.

And THEN ask them "what were you thinking when you spent that much money on that?"

A lot of the older collectors like myself are really disgusted with the way the hobby has gone. But if you open your mouth you are immediately denigrated and bullied by the younger people
