If not, what do you recommend?

I got some old garden area that gets over run with weeds. I don't do much with that space anymore. Too old. I was hoping to plant some asparagus there and maybe it will grow under natural conditions in zone 6.

What do you think is a good care free crop that just grows? I can water in a drought, but that is about it other than harvest some.

Thanks

Welcome to NGA, Invisibleflash --

I don't think any vegetable crop is going to thrive in an area that is allowed to "get over run with weeds." Unfortunately. If there is, I'd sure like to know about it...

Asparagus might grow in that spot, because it does grow "wild" - but I don't think you will get a very good harvest from it.

How large of a garden area are you dealing with?

Hello!

Yes, too bad the plants we want don't grow like weeds!

The space is not very large, maybe 20 x 10 feet or a little more. It is one of those deals where you carve out too much garden to take care of in latter years. I can probably weed a little, but can't do it right. The rest of the garden is more than I can take care of, so wanted to concentrate trying to work it.

For an area that size you could perhaps lay down some black plastic and cut holes in it for planting. Or consider growing in containers - or maybe elevated planters.

I can relate to the frustrations of the limitations we face as we get older!

Asparagus does not do well in competition with weeds. Starting asparagus requires some care especially in the beginning stages. The plant's need to be started at a certain depth, then covered in stages until they are at ground level.

While from then on less care is needed, they still need to have weeds removed and a certain amount of watering. The first two or three years there should be no harvesting, but after that asparagus should do very well.

The amount of time and effort is less than most plants in the garden, but not care free.

Dont know your location..
Seems to me tomatoes are pretty satisfying.. they mostly bear well and quality of what you get to eat is so markedly better than grocery store ones. Slice and eat. Simple prep.
Buy a couple plants, stick in the ground, mulch to prevent weeds, water...
Plant it and they will come.
