Fingers crossed.... I may have found Fire and Ice at a local nursery. It looks like it's going to be a little hard to find. Is Bluestone a reliable source? I don't want to order one from them if they're like Brecks.

Here's some blooms today

Beautiful, Rose! I like all of them! I am glad you post a pic of New York Night! How does it do for you? Is it even darker than what you camera captured? Your seedling is really nice. Is that a seedling from Winter Jewels Painted hellebore?

Karen,

The seedlings was from a secret hosta swap so I have no idea who the "parents" are.

Here's New York Night pic taken with my iPhone.

It might be a little darker than what I captured today.

The plants from Bluestone are not a bad size , I am just not a fan of the Coconut Fiber Pots they use. They seem to take a long time to break down. If you get from them just make sure to tear at them a bit to release the roots.

Do Hellebores tend to be kind of hard to find? I saw some in a nursery today and was going to grab a few because I liked the muted colors on them, but my goodness they were expensive. More than the budget was going to allow unfortunately. Blinking

Definitely some interesting colors on them though. I'll have to keep them on my wishlist for the future. Smiling

Not an easy plant to find but has been getting better the last couple of years. A slower growing plant that seeds can take up to 18 months to germinate and take up to their third year to flower. Hence their higher cost, so look for end of season sales or I have seen them at Lowe's on discount rack after flowers are done for the year.

Ah, okay. I don't know much about them, but that explains it. I was surprised at the price compared to the rest of the perennials they had available.

I'll keep an eye on them and hopefully the price comes down a bit. Their current SALE price is 3 for $100. And they were in 3" or 4" pots. I was a little disappointed, cause the muted purple and burgundy colors were pretty. Sad

That's pretty expensive for hellebores! I've never paid over $20 for gallon sized potted plants.

@njbob

Thanks for the info about bluestone. I'm not familiar with the type of rooting cup that you're talking about. I usually clear all the potting soil off the roots of smaller plants before potting them up. Do you remember when Walter's would wrap their seedlings in that material that helped them form roots faster, but it didn't break down in the gardens? I read that after a couple years the plants would just wither away. I make sure to check my smaller plants roots, and remove any materials surrounding them.

They are expensive here at Rogers garden, I think it was $29something for one gallon, I didn't buy it. But at least they have them, other stores don't have any.

Individually, they were $35.99. So that sale price was barely even a deal. Seemed really expensive... and for small pots.

I'll have to lurk them for the next while in hopes of an end-of-season sale on them. There were a few I was wanting to get. Maybe the other nurseries will have some soon for a better price.
